Default Dereks MS6 Build

Dereks MS6 Build


So I've finally decided to make a build thread being that my car is so close to being done.
I picked this MS6 up in december of last year. Had got rid of my 2012 MS3 2 months prior, went to a 350z because it was half the payments, hated it and then found this.
Came with a Turbosmart 50/50 BPV, OCC, Sure Full 3in intake, Sure boost tubes, Sure short shifter, plastidiped wheels.



Immediately I purchased a spare block to start to build.
Got some eagle rods to use in the block and CP pistons.




I couldnt wait to build the block before modding it so I got JBRs stiffest trilogy set, 3 port ebcs, and a full engine rebuild kit from Edge.




@KotzurRacing; made me a 2 port pcv plate



Purchased @PapaSmurf; old gt3582r



Got a top mount exhaust mani from a guy in Houston.
Was too close to the reservoir and the fact that he asked me if he could see my engine bay made me realise he made it for a MS3.
Test fit it on a 3, good to go, sold it.



Cobb AP v3



Battery relocated to the trunk



Got a set of Evo X wheels.




CX Racing IC piping and a TR8L core installed



Then This.



I had oil coming out of my 50/50 bpv, and it was dripping out of my SRI filter... The oil was coming out of my VC breather that was attached to the SURE sri
Got so bad that from San Marcos to San Antonio it lost 2 quarts through the VC into a makeshift Oil Catch Bucket.
Took it to my buddies shop and its sat there since feburary.

Got a beater to ride in for the mean time
1988 300ZX 5spd N/A



Since then I have ordered and recieved a big ol intake, blasted it down and deciding which color to powder coat it now.



ACT 6 puck clutch



Rear diff brace, rsb and lowering springs from Corksport



Crower springs, supertech +1mm intake and exhaust valves



Keyed crank and L19 head studs



A new top mount exhaust mani for the twin scroll setup





New DP and dump tube




JMF intake mani w/the port injection system from SP63




Short block is together



Now just have to get the intake and exhaust cams pinned and it will be time to put everything together and start getting it tuned and broken in.

I can see if I can dig up some pictures on it. It was really pretty easy for the battery. @KotzurRacing; has helped me with this whole build from the start and he made me that box. I think it was around 12 ft of 4 gauge wire(have to look back to find out) and then bolted the box to the spare tire cover, then sanded down an area of the frame and bolted the negative to it.

The red wire you see going into the fuse box runs into the same hole as the wire harness, sliced a small hole and lubed up the wire a bit and ran it through from under the steering column, pulled it through into the bay with some needle nose pliers, ran it under the box and attached it to the left side(looking from the front of the vehicle) wire post in the fuse box. We got a bit like this

(but big enough for the wire we used) and bent it at a 90 and bolted it down with the rest of the lines.
then pulled up the plastic molding along the driver side to the trunk, ran the wire under it till the battery, attached it to positive and grounded the negative

Okay! So, got the cams pinned and the engine timed yesterday.

First step, get the cams in the head, cam bearing caps tightened down, and cam timing tool in. Should look like this.


Notice how on the intake cam you have the 4 holes on the end.

Put the cam gears and timing chain on, release the tensioner pin and let the gears go into place where it would be perfectly timed(I have a keyed crank so the gear on the crank cannot move). We put an allen head bolt in so there would be enough clearance to drill the cam and gear while they were tightened down. Once the bolt was tightened we marked the vvt at 12 o-clock, anywhere between 12 and 1 would work. Really so would 3, 6, 7, 9, and 10 but we chose TDC to use. The exhaust cam you can drill anywhere.




From the front of the gear on the exhaust cam to the back part on the cam measured .43 in, so we marked a 3/16 drill bit .4 in from the tip took to the top secret jig and started drilling. The pins we bought were too long so we had to cut them down to .4 in.








Using the vice you see the cam in 2 images up, we put the exhaust gear and vvt on the cams, torqued them down to 55 ft/lbs, put them back on the head, tightened everything down and released the tensioner again. Bam, shit was perfect.

Well, @KotzurRacing; made a oil pump gear holder device today and torqued the bolt on that down



And then Got the timing cover on and everything on that torqued down and sealed.


Little by little.

Not much progress this week, been busy and there's a car on the lift I'm waiting on to be gone so i can use it.
But we got the valve cover powder coated and the oil feed line done, almost done with the drain line.
