Ebay turbo experiment

I have some tuning that I need to work on to clean up a little knock that I'm seeing but its nothing really to fret over. Here's a log from a multigear pull (3rd-4th) using the ebay turbo. What does the log really prove, though? You don't show MAF g/s, MAF voltage, AFR, load...none of the parameters you logged show a real good indication of power. Sure, your RPMs increase at a good rate, but perhaps you could take a datalog with the parameters I listed?

I hope it doesn't come off as hate. If anything, I'm trying to help you prove that it works well . I think it's awesome that the turbo is spooling up to 22psi and running hard, though!

Sorry, but logging the values you mentioned with the SB/Dashhawk is meaningless since the values that are reported are misrepresentations by the SB. The only real accurate indicator that you mentioned that can be shown is Input Maf-voltage but isn't that overly redundant if you can just compare the time it takes for a car with the same gearing/cams to go from gear to gear.

Usually Id hate on the Ebay turbos but since garrett got bought out by that Chinese group 2 years back the ebay ones have gone up in quality slightly. Still though if I learned anything from my 240 build is buy quality once the first time cause replacing the same part more than once is a waste of time and money.

As for this...anthony and his girl are one of our (me and my wifes) closest friends up here. His car is slower than yours because the turbo is smaller, he's stock block, and not going for big power - just fun power...apples to oranges...thats like me asking why are stock turbo ms3's slower than me when they weigh less and have more mod money invested into them...

none the less i find cagey's experiments fun and interesting to watch - i dont agree with some of them - but who cares - he's trying shit and that is cool with me

This thread is as gay as AIDS. We have the only known Mazdaspeed on the planet that can be tuned like most normal cars, testing out Ebay Turbos. No wonder why we fail as a community. At best this is a waste of $250. Not hating and have fun, but I just wish you spent this money on slicks and wheels and took a few trips down the 1/4 for trap speeds, not even ETs. You could even sell that shit back when you are done, and recover some costs. We need our power leader breaking elevens, not testing gook turbos.

Jake, this is my last poke @ Anthony but last time I checked but people have a HP goal in mind when they purchase turbos and attempt to match them with the turbo they purchase and who buys a 3076 with the intention of only making 400whp? Nobody, really. So I really don't buy into the not trying card. The smaller turbo can't even be used as an excuse too b/c when I was on the 5557 the car was still faster than his and the 5557 has a smaller compressor and turbine wheel than the 3076. Now, that's out the way , Jake you know you're cool in my book. Some of the humor I intended is starting to come full circle. Highest HP MS3/MS6 with a knock-off of a knock off turbo. The ebay KKR is a knock off of KKR which is a knock off German based KKK turbos (K03,K04, etc.)

Jason, I'm actually warming up to the track, last time I went to the 1/8th I had a blast. Heck, I would have went this weekend since I got a nice 5 day weekend but the track was closed.

I would be more inclined to get a set of slicks if we got a friendly pot going. Everyone who wants to be involved put in say $50 set a deadline and whomever has the best 1/4 time in the 11's gets the pot. Vid of run and timeslip would be required. Nobody would win the pot without an 11 sec pass.

whats wrong with making 400whp with a 3076? do you really think im gona push 30+ on this turbo with a stock block? i dont have money blowing out my exhaust tips like you that i can just spend at will on this car. i diddent want a 3071 because it spools too early and im dead center in the middle of the island for my 3076 so clearly i have chosen the right turbo for my application.

just because i dont want to max the shit out of my 3076 and risk blowing doesent mean my cars not "fast", nor do i give a fuck if your car is the fastest unicorn in the world. you cant claim your car is fast if you have never put it up against another car or a track to actually see what it can do. and btw "fast" isent defined by shady dyno results, there are 10 sec cars with less then 300whp..... so stop claiming that your car is "faster" then mine.


my only problem with you is that your modding ideas are "wreckless" IMO and the way you come across on the forums is worse then some of the brownies around here. Dustin has alot of good things to say about you but i cant see it by the way you post and how you come off as a person. i dont agree with ever running an ebay turbo on a car as expensive as this because the repercussions of something going wrong are just too high when you weigh the costs. im going to do my thing now and im going to quit hating on you for the time being cause its just getting old.

Can you please tell me whats inferior about the ebay turbo I bought compared to the garrett t3/t4 61mm compressor stage III turbine wheel? They both use 360 thrust bearings , they are both balanced, they are both made in China. Please enlighten me.

im willing to push my stock block (clearly as seen by my g/s and load values) but im not going to be stupid about it.

dont u think theres a reason for a 1000 dollar price difference between the turbos? clearly its not in the quality of the housings so the CHRA is the only thing left to skimp on. you nor i really know anything about what each turbo is made from but i do know that the garrett name doesent carry a 1g price tag so they must be doing something right......

call me stupid but after spending as much as i have on this car it seems retarded to skimp on the very component your relying on to make power/keep the car running good. maby its ok to do temporarily but i certainly wouldent call them equal quality turbos.

Well, I started tuning the car a little this evening . My initial log showed a KR count that reached up to 4, I so I wanted to clean that up. I added some fuel in the portion of the map that was knocking and pulled a degree of timing out slightly before the area it was knocking up until redline.

Here's the result of that, 4th gear pull (boost was 23psi)



Ill be posting the SB log shortly



Right now my input maf volts are almost dead on to what I was hitting with the 5557 with less boost. 4.55 to 4.6 (using the cp-e 3.25" maf housing)

Is this a direct bolt-on turbo for the most part? Are there any additional components required or will the stock size inlet and intercooler fit? What about internals, will stock internals work? Nice numbers! Nice to see this turbo is working great so far.

I dont know how well you read into the ebay turbo's but, this thing WILL fail. eventually. maybe not be in a month, a thousand miles or five thousand miles. but it will fail. 5 people i know with ebay turbo's all five failed. all within 5k miles, one made it to 8k on a rsx.


they sell for $2-400 for a reason. hopefully you dont plan on being on this thing for long and throw the 5557 back on.

Im not one for ebay turbos but they don't bother me. As for this one - I don't remember how your 5557 spooled but if the ebay turbo you are running isn't a massive 600-700whp turbo I wouldn't run it. It doesn't look like you hit the 22psi cut off of the stock map sensor till 5500rpms. That spool is way to late. Dyno queen style. I like full boost by 4000-4500 at the latest.

I have mixed feelings about the lag. If you go WOT at the bottom of 3rd/4th it feels way too laggy. However, the lag isn't an issue under normal driving conditions since the motor is under more load before you go WOT and the transient boost response in between gears is fine. Again, I have mixed feelings about the lag and want to see what this compressor wheel can churn out at higher boost levels before I make a determination on this turbo. The billet compressor wheels are amazing though compared to their cast counterparts.
