Default GT3071r Build Problems

I am trying to replace my smoking K04 turbo with a more reliable turbo. After looking, I decided to go with a GT3071r from SU because the price difference from the 2871r wasn’t much. I wanted to keep the car as much stock as possible. I was not looking for major performance gains (some would be nice), but it is my wife’s DD.

Ok so the changes:
1. GT3071r w/ IWG (stock from ATG)
2. 3” Air intake w/ stock MAF (removed from box) and cone filter

Everything else stock.

Now the problem. At first it didn’t want to start (had to pump the gas?!?). It originally had a CEL, but that cleared up along with the hard startup. Reving the engine while parked the A/F ratio peaked at 30:1, but the boost never got higher than -1 psi. During the test drive (before I noticed the A/F ratio) It was originally making a funny noise at 3500 rpms (sounded like constant BOV noise) and never produced boost readings. Originally I had the EBC hoses hooked up backwards. I switched the hosed with no change to boost reading, but haven’t made another run (due to concerns for the A/F). Any ideas why the A/F ratio is so lean? No boost readings?

All data readings come from my OBDII reader to my Android phone.

If all you have for supporting mods is a 3" intake then you are fucked.

Edit: car probably didn't start because you didnt scale your maf in any way. A 3" intake needs something along the lines of a 20-25% scaling through the maf rang to get you in the ballpark. I know that with the guys running a 3.5" intake their car wouldnt start without a maf scaling prior to trying to start the car.

Edit2: just saw that you are still using stock maf. nvm.

There is a ton of info here, ground up BTbuilds so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel. You really should have the supporting mods then go BT. Do some searching bro.

You would be better off with the smoking k04 on your car at this point.

You definitelly need an AP or Versatune at this point not only for your MAF scalling for for your WGDC scalling too. At about 70-80% commanded WGCG past 5k RPM on the stock tune the GT3071 can make very serious boost, probably over 22PSI. Best case scenario is that you get a boost cut, worse case scenario is that you get your oil pan cut by a rod/piston due to poor fueling and slow reacting stock BCS.

Forgive me if I don't have time to read threads that are 24 pages long of which 90% are useless (like most of these comments) and the other 10% are contradictory.

Also, I am a noobie, but I did do some research from the manufacturer.
http://www.atpturbo.com/root/release...eed6_dyno1.gif

For those that posted good questions. I stuck with the stock MAF which should eliminate having to do the MAF scaling (didn't change diameter so shouldn't need to scale). I also stayed with the stock ecu based on the results from ATP (good or bad idea I don't know). So, what mods are needed as a minimal to fix my problems? Also, is the no boost issue a seperate issue from the A/F ratio?

Please try to keep this thread short (keeping it easy to search for others) by posting only relevant comments or questions.

By the way, I didn't think that forums were meant to be money making machines.

People post stupid comments when there is a post that makes no sense.

I would have never done a bt with no hpfp internals, downpipe, big inlet, big maf, upgraded ic of some sort, and an ap.

Can you put a bt on a completly stock ms3, well sure you can but whats the point if you cant even push more hp than with the stock ko4( due to stock fueling systems that you have not upgraded)

Also what is your mods???? Just gt3071r, a intake, and thats it?

At the absolute bare minimum you should have an AP and CDFP internals.

Thanks staybroke for the help.

The original intention was just to replace the turbo with a better turbo (ball bearings). I don't care about more hp (fine if I get more), but the gt2871r was only $80 cheaper so why not go with the bigger turbo for later mods (this winter). I don't have the time to do a lot right now (especially since I just messed up for 48 Ford at the dragstrip).

As far as mods, I am completely stock except for the turbo (which caused the need for the intake) and the intake. The MAF is stock along with the DP and fuelpump.

I will look into the fuel pump, tune, DP, etc. later this year. Right now the wife wants here car back.

I would DEF. get a ap RIGHT NOW. You need to either take out the boost controller and hook a vac line to your boost source and then to the wga.

And you better hope you to creep as you cant even see what psi your hitting.

Also 15psi on this turbo is not the same as 15psi on the stocker.

Have you checked for vacuum or boost leaks? Why don't you have an AP? Why didn't you just buy someones used(non-smoking) K04 for like $150 instead of wasting ~$1500 on a turbo your car cant support?

I'd get a MBC if I were in your situation. The stock BCS can be a PITA since the WGA is completely different. i'd also get an access port, HPFP internals, RMM, and DP...minimum.

Or i'd sell that turbo and get a used K04 on the cheap.

lol well it would be a step in the right direction.

On the topic of the ebcs though. I would plug that bitch up and just run spring pressure. There is no way that i want stock tune controlling my gt30.

If you run this car as is you wont have an engine left to do mods "later this year"

You need so much right now to get that car running correctly you might as well put the smoking one back in.

Smoogs12,

Looking at the data from ATP, the A/F ratio stays below 12:1 after 3500 (11:1 after 5000). I'm not too concerned about high rpms because my wife never takes it above 4000. If I need to do further mods I can drive it (to keep the rpms low) until I get the mods.

So why did you come here, ask for help, get recommendations and warnings as to what will happen if you keep your current setup.... And then ignore them?

The potential for FAIL in this thread is rather extreme.

Please do some research before your next post is in the ZZB thread...

And I would strongly advise your not remotely trying to go WOT until everything is completely resolved (including HPFP and tune, which really aren't optional).

If you have an 07-08.5 I would be happy to cut you a custom AP tune to help you out.

staybroke,

I can read boost pressure with my phone and can data log.

As far as the BCS, after discussing with SU I installed a nipple in the silicon hose at the turbo outlet. Went from that nipple to the WGA with a T in the middle. From that T to the BCS (inlet closest to the sensor) and the other side to the intake (just like the stock setup). Hope that helps.

@48-f1

If you are using the torque app, your sampling rates are for shit and fail is stalking you like the grim reaper. Just please take some friendly advice and get a used k04 toss it back in there and save up for the supporting mods for a great turbo or sell said turbo and get a BNR stage one. End of story.

Hmmmm, gt3071 with oem wdgc values, should be fun lol.

This makes those kids that just throw bolt-ons on this motor without a tune/hpfp upgrade seem tame by comparison. Just throw on a turbo that flows twice as much as the stock unit with no other mods lol.

Best case scenario is that you get a boost cut, worse case scenario is that you get your oil pan cut by a rod/piston due to poor fueling and slow reacting stock BCS.
^^This. Get an AP like yesterday. If you have your stock intake that's fine, If you want to stay on the shitty stock zoom-zoom-boom-ing tune that's also fine as it has low load targets so you will not need pump internals or downpipe. But you need to fix the WGDC tables beacuse you will definitelly boost spike above 4500rpm at WOT. I know you said you will not go WOT, but... I'm not sure there's anyone here owning a speed who will not go WOT from time to time unless they're running an engine with a bent rod or some other major problems.

15PSI on this turbo is exactly the same as 15 on the stock turbo (and the other way around) as long as we refer to the same rev range and not peak values, because 15PSI with a big turbo at 6500rpm is different than 15PSI of flames with the stock K04 at the same RPM. Knowing the Boost and the RPM you can calculate the actual air flow and flow is where the K04 will fail.
The Boost is actually MAP (Manifold <-here's the keyword -- Absolute Pressure) less Barometric pressure, so 15PSI in the manifold is 15PSI in the manifold. Just that running the 3071 at 15PSI is like not going more than 15% APP on a speed - oh wait, you're already there!!

Ok i will try and be nice.
You came in here looking for help. People are telling you WHAT YOU NEED TO DO. to be safe with a turbo that large. You are either a troll or a really ignorant person. Just because you can just bolt stuff on to a carburated small or big block whatever doesnt mean you can do it on anything else.

If you goal was just to replace a smoking turbo you should have got a non smoking stock turbo. If you are not out for making power with this car a journal bearing turbo is fine. hell there are people here making 500+ on journal bearing turbos.

Here are my suggestions.
1.) Sell GT turbo. Buy used non smoke k04 or BNR stage 1
2.) Go online right now and at least order a cobb AP, and CDFP

As everyone else has stated those are pretty much your two options so you can safely operate this car. I am sure some people will help you with a tune so you can at least be safe.

Still smell troll, what person in the right mind would buy a GT30 just to replace a smoker with no aims of big power

your wife is going to be pissed that the car doesn't want to go if she keeps it under 4000rpm

Your wife is going to be pissed that you blew the engine because you just slapped a huge (relatively) turbo on.

Just by this alone, i'd say dont even respond to any more of this dude's questions.

obvious he's going with the "lets buy performance parts from autozone and slap em in" mentality.

if you're not going to help yourself, why should we help you? gtfo
