Default HEY GUYS I GOT A ?

I'm not seeing in many turbo off the wall setups. I was wounding if anybody has a sidewinder manifold on their car.
The reason I ask is I plan on making a turbo set up as soon as I get the car. And I'm thinking sidewinder is what I want to do with a pte6765 and other supporting mod's.

Really what are you planning on doing? See that you want to move into the speeds. Hopefully you can become established at MRD. And stay there for a while.

I have no reason to go anywhere. It's a good group of guys. And I don't want to just move in on the speeds. I just bought one. I like the car. That's the reason I sold the r33. Trust me I don't care to move in on anything. When the mazda speed came down to the shop I was impressed it is hard to find a group of people.

The only place to put it means first relocating the battery, you would need a custom mani, dp, intake, coolant lines, oil feeds n returns, all so u can make the same amount of power as someone who dropped in a ATP kit. You would run out of fuel before being able to use the power from a bigger turbo. Although it would be nice to see it done n pretty cool... The logistics at this time dont add up. Theres a hand full of guys with a top mount setup and they are all ms6's which have even less room to work with then us 3's do.

valve cover clearance with the compressor side can become and issue as well if you keep the turbo behind the motor. DJ had to cut out a section of his valve cover in order to fit his EFR turbo back there and not have the compressor outlet aiming straight at the hood.

DJ = @djuosnteisn;

DJ as well as several others have been around since the Dawn of the Speed 6/3.

Here is his section aka Perm Tuning

PERM Tuning - Mazdaspeed Forums

Thats a good place to start if you want some serious custom stuff that DJ has done. And not to jump to the end, but ima jump to the end...

I'll just leave this right here:

Brandon I gotta say, I like that you're getting into the platform, as you guys seem to have a lot of experience with cars.

I appreciate that you're thinking about alternatives, but we already have top mounts, and plenty of drop-in kits. We really don't need more options in that regard.

This is our BIGGEST issue with the platform:

Lack of Injectors.

Right now our Injectors will support ~400 whp IIRC, which is not enough. As you'll see, there's PLENTY of people pushing past that, and the only way we do it is by basically adding a PI setup on top of our DISI, this is called a 5th and even 6th port.

So this is what we really need your expertise/ability to R&D on: Newer, bigger, better flowing Injectors.

Brandon you let me know what info you need and I'll link you.

DJ is one of three who has made secondary fueling for us with the 5th/6th port injection.

JMF made an intake manifold with port injection as did CP-E with a cast manifold as i told you yesterday. I'll have to swing by the shop again when I have time to go over some of this stuff.

And once the 6 arrives we will have a hay day breaking into it.

I got an A, it's probably best not to start out a vendor ship here producing exhaust manifolds. There has been quite a history.

And once the 6 arrives we will have a hay day breaking into it.

hmm, Hello @Brandon@mrd; So let me ask a few things,

Why do you want a sidewinder setup? Any particular reason?
Why a PTE6765?
Are you asking these questions as Brandon for Brandons personal car? Or are you asking as Brandon@MRD for the MRD car?

I applaud you doing your homework before just jumping in and starting with stupid shit.

I like the sidewinder for many reasons one of the biggest is the fact if you make right theirs no reason for cutting anything for space constance. Just need better heat control shields ect ect.
I have used many many type's of turbo's and The PTE's on my dyno chart compared to others make boost faster. and more power at less psi. But I have not really used any BW turbo's. but all other brands I have many charts with hp levels.
And this is my personal car not MRD's But I do work at MRD. Which means I will be showcasing the work of MRD on it.These thing's will be thing's I wanna do to the car.

Well, so far we have not ran into a need to cut into anything due to space constraints. Their has only been one instance where thats been done and it was to fit one of the EFR turbos in a top mount setup, there for the valve cover needed to be shaved down for space. So in my honest opinion, the sidewinder setup will be nothing but a novelty item for you and will serve no purpose in aiding in additional space.

As to the PTE6765, IMO, that is too big for you to start out with. There is not a single Mazdaspeed 6 making more than 520whp right now, so throwing a turbo thats capable of over 900hp on is a little excessive right now unless you are properly set up for it in every way possible, i.e. built motor, good head studs (Not arp ) and fuel. I hope the best for you guys and your future here.

Not to whore myself out, but here is a picture of my setup, in this specific picture, the turbo is a PTE6766 CEA. Not my normal turbo. So as you can see, space is not really an issue.

Rokusek likes this.

I understand what you are saying but their are many reasons why I'm going sidewinder. Novelty Not so much I plan on staying top mount to start (making TM) with a sidewinder. Making it easy to inspect, change, aesthetically pleasing. I also know what you mean when you say I will need the supporting mods to make it all happen. This is far from my 1st build that was ten years ago before people could just jump on the net. It was learn as you go. Try this. Test this!! Before anybody could say this work's and this doesn't. Yes that's correct I'm in the processes of getting all the parts to build the motor and trying to make a plug and play meth kit. I plan on sleeve's and the hole nine. Making a intake manifold or modding the stock ITM. I plan On doing a lot with this car. The reason I going so big on the turbo is to buy one not Two or three before I reach my goal's. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying I'm right your wrong or anything to that affect But if Only one person's done it Don't you think other's should at lest attempted to test the waters and get real number logs and info on a sidewinder?
On a side note I didn't get to get a good baseline on the car was only seeing 12psi and code P0012 came up before I could really start to test some things I really wanted too. so I will need to fix those thing's before I can post my base line and install AP and Meth kit HPFP and other small things.

Not to whore shit out, but one of my locals made this for himself, as well as a few prior setups he's run. Can't say I've seen another like it. He could very well make a sidewinder in the near future. Pretty sure he's mentioned having one in the works

On a speed 6, I would go with a 62 or 6466, not the bigger, older 6765.

The 62 or 6466 will spool 20psi by 4k on a speed 6 and the 6466 will make as much power and more tq than you could ever want on these cars.

Also, I like the idea of a sidewinder, but I really don't think you gain ANYTHING in the areas of performance or fitment. There's not a precision turbo out there that will not fit in a 6 with a standard top-mount manifold. None.

Also, as some have said before, fuel is key. It's easy to set up really, but you will need a form of secondary injection. Whether that be two injectors pre-tb, or it be a port injected Intake manifold is up to you, but you'll need one of the two without a doubt.

Once you have ALL that down, enjoy building this motor to actually stay together. We've finally gotten most of the kinks worked out this year, but go into knowing a couple key areas of failure.

1. We have bullshit, pathetic, 10mm head bolts from the factory.
2. 10mm ARP2000 head studs will not support even as much power as stock head bolts.
3. NOTHING in our motor is keyed/pinned from the factory. All of our timing components are held together by magical diamond washers...no really they are.
4. We can't get shit for rpm outa these cars. You likely will not make any more power >7k, so choose your turbo wisely and expect to make a ton of tq.

Good to see more shops that know their shit making their way to this platform though.

Cool That's looks like a ram air type. A lot of Honda's have that type of manifold's. I've made those for Honda's and EVO's

Any advantage with this type of mani "ram air" over the typical manis we have available now?

It's a Ram Horn style mani, not ram air haha.

Anyway, it's very simple to build and flows pretty well. Those are really the pro's of that style. Location of the turbo would suck with that style on a speed though.

pretty sure that ram horn mani was made by that cageyvet guy. he def likes fabbing his own stuff up and seems to be pretty decent at it but i believe he got banned from here for being sketch or screwing people over.

One other thing to add to my first post is with the sidewinder, you'd likely have to switch to blow-through MAF, since you may not have enough room over there for a full intake with MAF in it. Then, if you go blow-through you'll be capped pretty low with horsepower, since you won't be able to run a big enough maf tube anywhere in a blow-through setup.
