CorkSport Titanium Oil Catch Can

We have been looking at building an oil catch can built from Titanium for the Mazdaspeed 3/6. What we are coming up against is the price which would be $149 due to the material and specialized welding required to produce the part. We would make a specific fit installation for the catch cans for the Mazdaspeed models. With the weight of the materials the assembly would weigh 8.5 ounces.

A solid works drawing below is of the idea we have come up with. The can would use stainless steel wool to help separate out the oil from the air in the top of the can.



For options we could oxidize the titanium to give it the purple color or just leave it the natural silver color.

Would you buy it if we made it?

Great Idea, I was looking for something I wouldn't have to mess around with too much. My noob self needs detailed step by step instructions (like your TIP) to do anything. And everything needs to more or less bolt on for me.

When you make the catch can, dont forget to add a second pcv to the system.

If you make it, make it "bolt on" include a 2nd pcv, include everything needed so its a kit as well as install instructions.

if you guys are just wanting to make a plain can and nothing else then it might need to be cheaper.

the saiko michi is a good can and is $80-$100, of course its not titanium.
seems most people here are about more function than finish. but if it is constructed as well or better as a michi can then there are undoubtedly some people that will want a nice looking one.

on a side note, if you can design a whole pcv system that is proven to work better than the factory system then there is quite a chunk of change to be made. ptp's system is still in the works from what i hear. also, most all members will want proof that it works as described.

Make sure that the design is large enough to handle the blowby produced by a high boost turbo engine.

Using a media filter on top of the restriction posed by the PCV valve itself can lead to a pressureized crankcase unless the filter media is large enough to flow the required cfm after being fouled by oil and carbon gunk.

A very effective method used by OEMs is to reduce the velocity of the blowby to a low enough speed that the oil cannot remain in suspension and literally drops out of it. This is done by changing the direction of the airflow using a maze type design and by using open chambers

If the kit had hose color options and was the complete kit with the hoses all pre cut and straight bolt on I'm sure a lot of people would buy it.

We are looking at offering a bolt on kit with specific cut hoses and installation instructions.

The design of the can which is not shown is to have two sections holding the large gauge media to catch the oil vapor and allow it to drain off. This is still an idea which is why we put it up to get feedback from everyone.

I have sent our product engineer a link to the forum post so he can look over the information people have posted up.

Titanium is lightweight like aluminum but more durable.

i am interested. i had a greddy universal but hated the size and fit. i am in if the install is easy and the thing stays access-able. how will you know when it is full is there a thing to check?

I don't see it being practical for you guys to make this. Matt Damond already makes a great kit for a cheap price. You are already starting with titanium and making it expensive. And if you locate it low... I don't see the need for good looks, and our terrible weight distribution can handle a few ounces over yhe front from a occ.

For your engineer, I cant remember what fps the air speed has to fall below for the oil to drop out of suspension in a maze type system, but its fairly low.

For catch cans some aftermarket companies use a centrufical type airflow patern where the blowby enters the catch can at the top along the wall of the can with the airflow generally flowing around the wall of the can in a counter clockwise fashon. It then flows around the wall of the can at least 360* to the exit tube which faces the clockwise side of the catch can and is located at least a couple inches directly under the inlet tube.

That type of design may be more effective than a media type system and may be cheaper to produce.

Jacob our engineer made an update to the design based on feedback.

Jacob's quote "I revised the design to get rid of the steel wool in the middle that might get coated in residue over time. Instead, it has an inlet and outlet that are both tangent to the sidewall. This will basically spin the atomized oil out of the air as shown in the picture. Also, the low pressure created in the bottom will also help suck out any oil that may be trying to make it to your intake tract. We are also looking into a cheaper AL version as well."

The edge would really come in with being a full bolt-in kit that's easy to mount, easy to service and effective at correcting the pcv problems (eg. a 2nd check valve.)

We plan on having bolt in installation kits for the oil catch cans.

i agree no need for titanium. aluminum and titanium I believe are not compatible metals and will corrode over time. Double check for Galvanic Corrosion of dissimilar metals. Correst me if I am wrong.

Here is a picture of one of the test pieces.



We finished up an install in a test vehicle (Mazdaspeed 3 with over 100k) to run it for a few weeks to see how it performs. We installed the can right below the washer fluid reservoir and put a drain plug through the undertray for easy of draining.

We have several design style in the field for testing right now. When we emptied the first one and we sent off the contents for analysis to get a better idea of the content of the crankcase content.
