As you guys mentioned in your article, the big IF is emissions. While ingenious, one of the rotary's main flaws is its high surface area to volume ratio (due to 'oblong' combustion chamber) compared to traditional piston-cylinder engines.

I'm excited/interested to see how Mazda approached this issue.

Sounds like they plan on making it a hybrid. They patented some interesting stuff a bit ago that points in that direction.

whens the last time Mazda really watered down a car from concept to production though. I mean I know the brakes, wheels and mirrors will change for sure but dont see much that will be watered. Bigger headlights maybe.

I like the design of the car but there's a couple of things that would be deal breakers if they weren't just for show. The carbon ceramic brakes and the carbon fiber wheels are chief among them.

Multi-thousand dollar brake jobs and wheels that PA pot holes will compromise on impact are not something that I would want on a car that I put more than a couple hundred miles a year on. Likely they were just for show, but I would have liked to see a more production ready car shown with actual engine details.

That said if it's sub 60k I'll likely be putting money down on one sight unseen.

The car did look rather polished IMO for just a concept. Maybe it's the fact that I want this to actually happen so bad it's killing me... I made a bet 3 years ago that mazda would make another rotary by 2017. I would hate to lose the 50$, but it would be worth it if it comes by 2020 at least.

I really like this car. I am hoping it's a turbocharged disco nacho. I actually like the rear end, very FD like.

No way this motor will be FI. Rotaries just seem to get thirstier with boost, not more efficient. DI will be interesting, as it used to be done on 13B's w/ Toyota 2GR DI as aux fueling.

I dislike the staggered wheel setup, but if you can run that much rubber on the front, and this car comes in under 3k lbs, it will be BEAST.

My questions revolve around this chassis being used in sports car racing, and the motor being used in prototype chassis.

FD drives just like a big Miata so that makes sense.

It seems this will be powered by a 1.6L, allegedly the same 16x (though improved) we saw almost 10 years ago in a rotary concept car.

My recollection is that the fd is on a stretched miata chassis.

The rx8 is on a stretched miata chassis. When in race trim they run similar times at the track. The 8 is severely underpowered though

18x10's fit stock, and that's a shit ton of tire for <220whp. I wish NA 20B's swapped right in to the FE33 chassis... that's the ticket right there. I am sure Mazdaspeed Motorsports still has some of those race Thrice Rotors sitting around, for sale.
