You can actually use some split loom and polyken high temp tape to cover the exposed wiring if you no longer have the ECU cover.

Air clings to smooth surfaces. Think "golf ball".

The flow in the intake is turbulent, not laminar.

Please check the calculations in the following spreadsheet. Not sure where your Reynolds number equation came from but it looks wrong to me because it doesn't include a viscosity term, but it may be a different form I am not aware of. Reynolds numbers over 2300 are transitional IIRC with numbers over 4000 being turbulent. MAF sensors are designed to operate in fully developed, turbulent flow.

Ziggo is right,

air density=1.2 (kg/m^3) @ 20 celcius

Q=Flow=VA

Q=0.300 (kg/s)*(1.2 (kg/m^3)=0.25 (m^3/s)

V=velocity= Q/A=(( 0.25 m^3/s)*4)/(pi*0.076m)=55.11 (m/s)

Re=(density*V*Diameter)/dynamic viscosity

dynamic viscosity @ 300 k approx 27 celcius = 1.983 E -5 (kg/m-s)

Re= ((1.2 kg/m^3) * 55.11 (m/s) * (0.076 m))/(1.983E-5 Kg/m-s) = 253,451.6

So the flow is very much turbulent at 300 g/s

Originally Posted by Lex View Post

Re = (Q*D)/(v*A)

where Q is the volumetric flow
D = diameter
v = air velocity
A = cross sectional area

At 20* C and sea level air density is about 1200 g/m^3
That means that if we flow 300 g/s we are flowing around 0.25 m^3/s

Air velocity in a 76mm pipe flowing 0.25 m^3/s is around 55 m/s

That leaves us after some cancellations of radius with 0.25*2/ (55*pi*0.076) which is a Re of ~0.04 which much less than 1 at that flow rate.

Generally the Re has to be quite a bit larger to have turbulent flow.

Of course this is idealized for just a straight pipe and the bends in the intake do affect the airflow and create turbulence, but the MAF sensor requires a level of laminar flow to achieve a correct reading so at least part of the intake has laminar flow. Further as the velocity of the air increases the flow becomes more laminar and this is why MAF sensors in larger intakes are able to read large airflow rates fine while they struggle with low airflow rates.

Wondering how you determined flow to be turbulent and to what extent.
Lex your formula is Ok, but the mistake is that "v" in this formula is not velocity it should be Kinematic Viscosity of the fluid

Doh! That's the mistake! Thanks for pointing this out guys! Time to recalculate the material effects on the flow of the intake.

Correct. This is an awesome thread learning this exact stuff at UNI right now. Changing the boundary flow to turbulent from laminar soon as possible will reduce the drag, allowing greater flow, yes?
Also, can you see a possibility of designing an air box for this if it won't be possible to modify the existing corksport air box for the stage 2 intake..?

Checking this out tomorrow. Might just clear. Or we have to get a little creative for the MS6.

I think we could do 4" fine with the ECU relocated and the battery pushed back the way Brydon did it but like Brydon said, 4" is neat but the stock head wouldn't be able to handle anything near 4" flow.

Just curious, are you going with a new car battery holder? Are you setting up for a 51r battery? I see you moved the ecu to the front in the battery compartment. Is this to accommodate bigger tip?

Training at a Tsa secret location. Sequestration is here!

If you have problems with your silicone intake/tip deforming, your problem is pressure ratio. Your intake is just plain too small. There shouldn't be enough vacuum there to distort its shape.

The airflow gain in alum vs silicone isnt so much from the material itself as it is from the shape. If the aluminum is mandrel bent and the inside isnt clogged up with weld sugar/beads then for the same ID alum should out flow silicone because silicone will collapse slightly and it bends/ovals upon installation. Round always outflows other shapes.

Heat transfer in a FI application is almost stupid, air is in the intake for a few thousanths of a second during boost and off boost it doesnt matter. If intake heat killed HP, no one would ever buy a SRI.

A TIP isnt rocket science, make it round, reduce the bend radius(es), sell for a lower price. Its real simple.

The best TIP is a massive air filter clamped to the turbo, anything else is splitting hairs.

Agreed.

There is not enough time for any drastic heat transfer to take place when moving air at high velocities such as the compressor wheel produces.

That theory alone tends to drive tons of people away from metal intakes all the time.

I don't think we'll hit June. If you can wait, I think it will be worth it to you.

What kind of price point are you guys trying to hit? I know from past CS products price was always fair but if this is going to be a "limited" production kinda deal will the price reflect that?
