(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score car was dying at idle and running like crap unless i was at a high rpm... (had to get it home) changed plugs and wires... took off coil pack and #4 was corroded. tried to clean it out as best i could but issue persists.... maybe not quite as bad but still dies at idle sometimes and is missing like crazy. gonna replace the pack but wondering if anything worse could be causing it?? hoping not a cracked head or anything... |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score the contact on the coil where the plug wire connects was totally full of corrosion... cleaned it with alcohol pads but its still really dull looking where the others are shiny copper... and should there be some kind of spring in there? (i've seen springs referenced on here) alot of junk fell out of the hole when i turned it upside down dumping the corrosion out... |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score figured i'd get some knocking if it was a rod... dont really hear anything like that. been searching... only thing close to this problem that i've found is people spraying their engines off with water hose and having a similar problem... but not exactly the same... Sounds like your coil might be fubar though. Yes there is a spring inside the coil. | |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score well i'd say it was about 2 or 3 carlengths long and about 2/3 up my wheel... but thats just an estimate... i had hit something the other night which i think broke some of the plastic scrub plate on the bottom and when it hit the water it bent it under the car thus letting water shoot up into the engine some... although when i looked under the hood i couldnt tell that water had really been in there... I did take off my air filter and check to see if it was damp and it wasnt. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Its probably just the coil gone bad. Another way is you can check the resistance on the terminals to see if its bad. Its in the workshop manual. Resistance should be something like in the infinite range between the two end terminals and somewhere in the K-ohm range between any other of the two (dont quote me on this). There is a guy selling coils here in our marketplace in you need em (donating will get you access) |

| Not Ranked : 0 score That's the jist of it... You're driving a Speed, right? Just wanted to be sure. If yes, stop using the phrase "plug wires", you don't have plug wires. Not meaning to be a dick, just double-checking since you're not using a sig. Anyway, unplug and remove coil packs from 4 and any other cylinder, 3 is as good as any, and switch just the coil packs around. If you were to move wires, not coil packs, bad things happen.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score ehhh, no mine isnt a speed... its the one in the avatar. regular 4 cyl. and yeah i guess it just has wires... saw what are i guess coil packs in a pic while researching the issue... definitely not what i have. mine are just standard wires... which is why i ran that last question/statement by you because i thought it wouldnt run correctly crossing wires. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Gotchya. Wow, going old school- same theory, pull #4 wire at both ends pull another wire and place in #4 holes, both ends put the #4 wire where you pulled the test wire make sure wire length will be sufficient to reach insert standard bitching about this being a speed forum

| Not Ranked : 0 score oh, and swapping plug wires is no where near as exciting as swapping CP's, since plug wires cost less than the gas needed to drive to the parts store & buy new plug wires. & that's likely all you'll learn is if the wire is good or not. At least it's quick.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Since not coil pack, and since only one of four in same place effected, likely not from water crossing. I don't have any service manuals or other reference to pull diagnostic testing info for your 4in1 coil pack system. Such diagnostic info would be readily available on a site that more catered to the standard 6 rather than the speed6 & speed3. We do have substantially different engines. Might want to register over on mazda6club.com and pass the question around over there as they have a HUGE user base of standard 6's.
