Default better mpg on Arco gas

Hey all,

has anyone found that they have better mpg on a certain type of gas? I've been using Shell since I first got the car new in 09, but lately my mpg has dropped down to 22 range (total miles/gallons filled). I went to arco recently because it was the closest gas station and I was able to get 25mpg. Both on 91 octane. Does anyone experience the same thing or feel that the brand matters at all?

1. There are threads on this subject, you'd know this if you'd searched a bit (the answer is: it can, but it's not a universal truth for one brand vs. another).

2. There are threads on tuning for improved fuel economy. 22-25mpg isn't that fantastic for the MS3. There are guys on here who regularly average closer to 30mpg.

I get the best miles per tank with arco. Had to get some Shell last week cuz there was nothing else and I was in dire need and it was just as good mileage wise. I'm on my second tank of shell, so I'll see by next week

I don't know how anyone could get 30mpg with these engines, even given the fact that the MS3 is lighter than the MS6. Even on long trips where I've filled up the tank, immediately gotten on the freeway, and then driven until needing gas, I've never exceeded 25 MPG. You'd have to be driving downhill doing 55mph in 6th gear the whole way.

Either your tune is too aggressive to allow for it, or your foot is too heavy. I can average 32+ mpg in the summer all day long on the highway at 72mph. Check the MPGTooning thread if you need some info on how to set the low load, low-rev portion of your tune to improve fuel efficiency. I'm not the only one either. ChuckMS6 is even better about this than I am, as his tune allows him to average more than 30mpg in his MS6 AROUND TOWN.

This has to be one of the most beaten to death topics on a million forums, heh.
Around here everyone says that Arco is crap, probably just because it's like 10-20 cents cheaper than any other brand so people assume that it's low quality. I've only tried Arco a few times because their pumps used to charge to use a card, and most of the time it wouldn't even accept my card at all so I gave up on them.

I agree. i was able (per AP mpg reading) to hit 30 mpg in 6th doing no more than like 55 on totally flat ground. any incline whatsoever and it would drop to around 25 easy

Yep. Most of the time, I do. But I don't really see any reason to spend more on speeding tickets and gas. They're poor investments. If I'm going to drive with my foot on the floor, there's a time and a place, and long-distance drives isn't it.

Sitting in a quiet bathroom with 3 occupied stalls next to me taking a dump and I LOL at this. Accidently pinched off mid turd too.

Thanks for the laugh bro! (ps. I get 260 to a tank of 14 gals. Because turbo enabled)

i think it is very misleading to everyone when you say you get 30MPG on long trips. I dare you guys to come to Tampa and tell me you get 30 MPG in city traffic here.

I'm glad I don't live in Tampa then. :-D

Around town I average about 25mpg, though when I'm feeling like "having my turbo enabled" I've had tanks that average ~11mpg too.

Thanks for the replies all, I was wondering if I was way off with 22-24mpg. I'll look into the low-load low-rev thing. I don't drive that aggressive either, most of the time it's around 3k and under 4k. Just seemed odd because "cheap" arco gas ended up with better mpg than the "brand name" shell.
