(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Hi all, So my 2007 MS3 engine died last week. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth saving or if I need a swap. It may have missed some oil at some point, due to the fact that it just burns off soooo much, it was near impossible to keep up. So 3 months ago I noticed a rattling sound from the engine on startup only. It got gradually worse, to the point where it would rattle really loud while I was driving, especially before shifting as you will be able to see on this video: Video here. Noise starts @ 0:05 until shift. Is that just knock? Or something else? Thanks for any info, much appreciated, as I am without a car right now and it's really difficult... |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I would recommend engine/turbo replacement. If the engine was already consuming oil to the point where you couldn't keep up, likely impossible, then its not worth fixing. Also, it was run low on oil to the point where its making noise. Yes it can be fixed, but it'd be a ticking time bomb unless completely rebuilt. The reason the turbo is recommended is for a couple of reasons. The first being it could've been the cause to the oil consumption, the second being it was most likely damaged from low oil.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I have a yard local to me that buys "sports cars" and they had a lower mile used engine with turbo. I was able to replace my engine myself as its what i do for a living. If you have the time knowledge and space, its not a difficult job, but can get pricey. If going the used engine route, i highly recommend checking compression if at all possible, if not do it as soon as you get it running since most reputable places have a warranty on their engines. After that, replace the timing chain/VVT, clutch, rear main seal and clean the valves. That's all a lot easier while the engine is out of the car.
