F-it. I bought one. I'll put the stock banjo bolt back in and test everything again. I'm thinking the PCV pressures can mess with the oil pressure readings I was getting at the pre-turbo oil fitting. I hope we finally have the end all be all of oil fixes this time. I'm tired of the "works for me and him, but not that guy" reputation of previous fixes on this board and others.

Thanks, I hope this is the final fix for these. We have had a 100% success rate so far with every customer that has installed one, so I expect to see this trend continue.

i dont know where your living in va but ive been living here for 22 years and i have never once had to get an emissions check to get my inspection completed nor heard of anyone getting a ticket for emissions.

Hi John,

I was re-reading everything (probably because I am very excited!!) and noticed one of your replies. Am I mixing apples and oranges here? This testing is not the smoking turbo fix? or is this testing the PCV re-locate?

This little smoking turbo fix is not going to induce knock, right? Sorry, I got a little paranoid.

just ordered john i hope this thing works. I will take out my bnoon bolt and give this a try. does it go in the upper pcv hose coming off of the valve cover or the one that you have to access from underneath?

Quite the opposite. I have been working for a while to eliminate my part throttle knock with ATR with no luck. I can reproduce the part throttle knock fairly consistently at around 2750 RPM in 4th gear between .35 and .5 load (easiest to achieve on a slight incline.) In looking at the part throttle knock, one thing was always occurring, my intake pressure was in vacuum and transitioning from between -1 and -5 to between -7 and -10. It occurred to me that this may also be creating a condition where the PCV valve was going from closed to open.

Even though I wasn't smoking I asked John to install the fix to test if it had any effect on part throttle knock. Drove the 4 miles to John's house (intentionally inducing knock several times on the way) and had him install the part. I then drove around for a bit (about 10 miles total) trying to induce knock. I could not.

Now I am not willing to say that this fixed the knock yet as there are occasions (though rare) that I simply will not get any knock. I will do so more testing tomorrow, and then for the next week trying to induce part throttle knock. I will post back tomorrow and then after a week (or before if it turns out this actually has no effect on part throttle knock) but for now I will say that it looks encouraging.

i am not smoking at the moment...running full catless exhaust....however I am still interested in purchasing this if this will benefit my car in the long run....and if it will help smooth en out any kind of unwanted knock retard

I ordered and will but stock boone bolt back in. But I will also lower my idle a bit too. Assuming 1 month from now this fix is THE fix, what oil weight is the best to use and more specifically, for a Tampa resident? I have amsoil 10w-30 in now. I ask the question because people were changing their oil weights to combat the smoking issue although the change may not have been optimal.

Yes this is the smoking turbo fix not the PCV relocate. It will not induce knock but probably cure knock (still testing). So your good to go with zero negative side effects. Thanks.

Thanks, that was the idea. Charge something that was fair but still allowed me to recoup the R&D time. Several people said to sell if for $99 and others said $50, I said get this out there for the masses and rely on the fact that people will start talking about it across the internet that the smoking turbo, part throttle knock (still testing) and possible better motor life are all attainable with a $25 part. We determined that 4000 units/sales would be market saturation and if the part works 1/2 as good as we have seen, that should be easy.

We will see, never hurts to have a back up plan (pat pend). I would suspect that Mazda might catch wind of this as well and we might be in talks with them before to long, but that might be a stretch of the possibilities. Only time will tell.

To update on knock. I was able to induce knock this morning going from cold. However, just hitting operating temperature from cold, I can usually induce knock at will (like 99% of the time) over and over. This morning, I was only able to get knock twice, slightly lower in the RPM range and just before operating temperature was achieved. Once the car was up to temperature, just like last night, I could no longer induce knock at all no matter how hard I tried.

This will obviously require a bunch more testing to determine if this does in fact help to reduce part throttle knock. I will be going out on random drives a bunch this week when I start from a cold car. Will keep this thread updated with my results. I will also pull the part out at some point and see if I can induce knock again with it out (after driving with it in and not being able to induce knock.)

Erich, thanks for all the help and testing data. I appreciate it and I am sure that all the others here on the forums appreciate it as well. I will have one other local that is going to start monitoring the knock condition as well. I will also be starting a thread as customers start to get there oil burning fix to report back on any and all knock issues.
