Backstory-

Known lower compression in #2 (150-160); compression #s 180-150-165-180

Observed little bit of oil pooling in intake in past by turbo coupler but not terrible.

Car goes through ~3 qts of oil every 5k miles; it goes through much less when I stay off the boost.

Newer BNR S3v2 21psi to 24psi @ redline.

No OCC; stock PCV/vent cover breather setup.

Ran ok over weekend, noted more wot kr than normal north of 5k, suspected due to higher intake temps (100F+ ambient).

Fouled #2 plug this morning, pretty bad. No smoke otherwise. CEL logged, reported misfire #2 .

This is pic of #2 plug. Definitely fouled; combination of oil and gas.



Replaced #2 plug.

Car is now smoke machine. Looks about like this in driveway when I get on gas out of gear. Idles ok, not missing now. Left running for a while in case fuel/oil just built up when plug fouled, still smoking.



Haven't run compression yet. Suspects are #2 rings shot/ringland or PCV valve totally shit the bed. Turbo isn't a suspect at this point.

I also noticed a bunch o oil in the TMIC when I pulled it to swap plug. This is very recent; I pulled it like 500 miles ago and it was clean.

No blown dipstick.

About 25% of me wants to sell it, but 75% wants to move forward. I am between several options if tonight goes poorly.

On one hand, I can have a local builder rebuild my long block with all of the parts I want. This is a cheap option but there is some risk in the shop building the motor exactly right out of the gate. The MZR is kind of it's own animal.

I know Edge has sourced that remanufacturer of the MZR long block and I bet that thing is probably decent. For $4k + the no fault clause, that wouldn't be a bad way to go. I have 0 aspirations of pushing this car past 375-400whp.

Finally there is the speedperformance setup where I can get a well upgraded reman'd engine for ~$5k shipped.

Any of these options will take me about 1.5-2mos to get back on the road. Holding out for the PCV...

Compression test first. Is it only #2 that is fouled like that? That's a lot of smoke to be caused by a single cylinder. That much smoke is often a turbo issue but if only 1 plug is fouled something is going on in #2 .

Turbo is a low mileage bnr s3 V2 that doesn't have a reputation of burning oil.

I had a 13' speed 3 in today with a blown turbo. It smoked exactly like that, and heavy.

Usually a car with bad rings or valve seals just have a nice blue tint while driving.

The picture of that smoke screen does look more like a turbo. Regardless the motor is clearly hurt. Hopefully a chunk of piston didn't go through the turbo or something silly like that.

I had one cylinder at 95 on a cold compression test, there was hardly any smoke at all.

Ok so we've established that the car might have multiple issues, one being the turbo might have a seal issue.

Regardless, 105 cylinder has to be addressed.

I'm going to do motor swap myself so I can save $$ and get a built motor. I will either do the speedperf6ormanc3 reman'd motor with internal upgrades or have the equivalent made locally if I can get in bed with a shop I like. Then a fidenza fw and upgraded clutch and try to keep the entire project under 6k.

I'll return turbo to manufacturer for sanity check.

I'll try and recoup some from the rebuuldable long block and spare head I have.

My car started to smoke all of the sudden, started to check everything and I had 185 - 70 - 185 -185 compression test....rings failure on piston #2 , But i didn't had that much smoke... and if you idle fine that is also weird, my idle was really bad...

That pic was just an example. The smoke probably wasn't that bad and definitely had a blue tint to it. At idle it was smoking lightly and if I revved it would make a cloud.

Sorry to see that but the good is that your engine didn,t throw a rod out of the bloc yet so good chances that it would be easily rebuildable. Probably need to be bored larger to remove scratch on #2 but if no parts got out of the cylinder, everything else is in good shape.
i would not use it until i can get a rebuild if you use that route...And i would give a try to the newer pistons design.

For the turbo, you may give it a close check or have it checked before put it back on the new bloc but going build may be time to go larger !!!

I spent a few days evaluating my options and this is where I am. The MS6 concerns me because it's an 8 year old limited production platform. After I spend this money, I simply can't afford for the PTO or rear end to go out and that is always a risk with this car.

This motor will push me to the ends of my means for a while. My repair/mod budget is $0.00 for at least a year after motor to pay off this work.

I have 100% decided that I will never add aux fueling to this car beyond factory capabilities. That puts me to 375-400whp goal max.

These are my motor options:

1. Edge reman'd long block $4,000. This is a non-starter for me. It's just too close to a new engine price and there are no guarantees of what parts are used (pistons, upgraded vvt, etc.). It also isn't the cheapest and still runs a 4-6 week lead time.

2. Rebuild motor with upgrades (pistons, rods) using local builder. After parts/labor and full rebuild kit I can do this for around $2,800; maybe a little less.

3. Brand new long block from MSM with latest/greatest parts factory built for $3,400 shipped.

4. Speedperf6rmanc3 motor with basic upgrades for $6,250. This is their most basic package with a factory fresh block. 4 week lead.

Options 1 and 4 are out. 1 has too long of lead time and isn't at a particularly attractive price and configuration to me. 4 is just too overbuilt for my needs. With #3 option I can sell my rebuildable long block and the cost will be less than the rebuilt long block with some goodies. Unless I am seeing it wrong, it's a tough choice.

That leaves #2 and #3 as my options. I am still flip flopping between those two, though I am considering dropping in #3 , doing a nice tune without pushing the limits on it (350-375) and running that for a few more years until I move on to something else. There's something pretty sexy about a fully buttoned up factory fresh virgin motor with the latest parts. I am sure a lot of internal parts have rev'd since 06 and I will know this motor from the beginning instead of being second owner to a dumbass 20 yo kid.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: For the clutch, I am going Fidenza FW + LUK.
