Exclamation MS6 PSA - Takata airbag defect prompts recall of all 2006-7 Speed6's

2006-7 MS 6's are part of the 33.8M car recall prompted by defects in airbags manufactured by Takata.

The airbag inflation cylinder can explode sending out metal shrapnel when the bags deploy. Deaths have been reported due the the Takata defect.

So you guys are driving around with an IED in your steering wheel.

Takata air bag recall list [UPDATE]

edit: I wouldn't be surprised if 2007 MS3's don't get added to the list. you can check by entering your VIN here:

http://www.safercar.gov/rs/takata/index.html

my 07 MS3 is not currently on the list so maybe the MS3 guys dodged the shrapnel.

I received the letter a few months ago. Asked the service manager at my local Mazda and he said don't plan on having it done soon. I've heard it will take years to get all of the defective units replaced. Good time to be down for a build I guess

yeah, with the millions and millions of cars out there it will take a while. its personal preference but if it were me, I'd disable the damn thing until I got it replaced. I prefer to trust a seatbelt over getting a face full of shrapnel any day.

I've gone to 2 different stealerships, both denied even hearing about this recall.

How do you disable the airbag?

I think theres a way on the MS6, if i can recall correctly. It involves unplugging the seatbelt sensor (not sure of the official name) underneath the drivers seat. I could be wrong but i remember reading a few yrs back...at the time i was looking to disable that annoying fucking beeping for those quick grocery store trips.

Dont quote me though

If you have a Mazda Dealership near they would know. I took my 6 speed to the local dealership for an idler tension warranty defect and they did the airbag recall work without me even mentioning it. I was shocked they mentioned it because I received the letters but forgot to ask about it when I dropped the car off.

Here in Canada we still have no parts for this recall. Are you guys starting to get parts down in the states?

I just called my nearest dealership last week and they told me it'd still be around a month before the parts are in.
I also asked them which airbag needed to be replaced and the guy said "drivers, but eventually passenger side too". wtf?

I got a letter about the driver's side a few weeks ago. I took it in last Saturday and they did both recalls (driver's and passenger's airbags). I received the passenger side recall notice in the mail shortly thereafter.

Well i took my speed 6 in for an oil change last week and to my surprise they had the parts for the recall. I asked them which side the recall was for and they told me that only the driver side has the recall so that is what they replaced. I might have to give them a call if the passenger is affected too.

I still need to call to see if my dealer has the parts to do it.

Has anyone here successfully disabled the airbag?

I had mine done about two weeks ago and they replaced both the driver and the passenger airbags. No cost to me out the door (obviously).

You might want to confirm ...

Took mine in last week & was in & out in 20 minutes or so. They didn't replace the whole airbag unless they do it while reusing the same black plastic cover w/the flying M on it in your car...

pretty sure that plastic cover is just as cover/part of the wheel, the airbag is behind it, so they wouldnt be replacing that.
