if you have a catless DP you need a new CBE in my opinion. dont waste your money replacing mufflers, get the right set up from the start. should have gotten one before the DP.

You need a tune if you do not have one. When I was stock I would get all that smoot shit on the back of the car too. Now with a tune, do not get it that much. Stock tune runs very rich.

To actually answer OP's question, I am having some problem understanding how his muffler is getting black.

I have a catless dp/rp combo as in sig. I am running the stock CBE, because it has been shown time and time again to flow extremely well on the gen 1 Speed 3, so well so that aftermarket CBE's only change sound. The stock CBE's flow rate, even when behind a big 3 inch catless dp and rp, still outflows the maximum flow rate of the stock K04 turbo.

Now, having said that, I have 64,000 miles on my gen 1 MS3. All but about the first 15,000 has been with the catless dp/rp. My resos, my entire CBE, my muffler are all spotless. There is no black on my muffler.

Now, I do get some build up on the exhaust tip, and I do get some buildup of black stuff on the rear bumper and valance. But not on the muffler.

There must be something else going on.

And to replace the stock muffler, unless it's got a hole in it or has corroded through the shell (maybe salt on the road or something like that), seems an extreme remedy just because it has changed color. It's under the car and not visible.

my thought with the CBE is that with the new DP you are getting stronger compression and the old system has crap all in it and that is why it may be blackening.

I know that CBE is more sound that performance, just trying to help with what little knowledge i have. had this issue on a 240 and when i switched out the CBE it cleared it up.

Sorry I meant to say my exhaust tip not muffler I thought they were the same thing... My car seems to run fine on this tune with the downpipe other than the blackness on the tip.... Does anyone sell new exhausttips

Very fine steel wool . . . furniture grade . . . 0000 is the number. Use that and a petroleum based solvent like kerosene, diesel fuel or even WD-40. Ought to get the job done. It's available anywhere, even Walmart, in the paint, stain, furniture refinishing department.

I actually replaced my stock tip with a single wall Magnaflow tip at the time I installed the downpipe. It's stainless and a little smaller than stock - 3.5 inches rather than 4.0 inches. It's a high polish finish and that's how I keep it clean and polished. You can get a mirror finish with that really fine steel wool.

Wenol metal polish will get the soot off the exhaust tip. It's not stained. If it's chrome or stainless steel, that shit can be cleaned off with a little elbow grease and a good metal polish.

noob.

The stock exhaust should prolly flow fine to 400hp.

All op has to do is clean his damn car and get a tune.

This is not necessarily true, I gained data proven maf flow just from a catback.

Maybe 0 hp, or 1 or 2; nothing significant. HP gains come from the DP (cat removal).

I gained a repeatable 3-4g/s after catback, no downpipe or racepipe. This is probably in the range of 4-6hp. Thank you very much bernouilli.
