Default My DIY Heavy Shift Knob

So a quick rundown of my background. I work at a custom machine shop where I have access to a full machine shop as well as some cheap/free materials.

I have the mod bug like crazy, but have to restrain myself due to car payment/getting married in 6 months/ closing on a house at the end of this month/ and student loans.

So after getting jealous of stuff on here I decided to DIY myself some items. Attached are the pics of my heavy shift knob. Its a plain 1018 steel, black chromed out with engraved pattern then hand painted. Got the material for free and did all the work myself. So total cost to me was $0, just time, which I have a fair bit of.

I guess let me know what you guys think. (sorry for the shitty cell phone pics)

You should sell them! I would buy one in a heartbeat (if it's within my price threshold)

Haha, thanks guys. Hmm, hand thought about making some to sell. I guess I could look into it. I would have to figure out how to do the painting better, it took forever, and a fair number of trys to get it looking right.

How about just sell them raw and have the person who buys it paint it themselves? It would save you time from having to paint them, make you money since your selling the raw product and it'll allow the purchaser to make it their own with the paint scheme they want. Just a thought.

very nice work by the way. I wish I had the machines to do something like that. I would be fabbing up all kinds of shit for this car.

+1 to selling them "raw"
or you could give option of "raw"
or painted with additional cost.

Thats not a bad idea. I would have to look into the cost of material and coating (I got the stock for free and piggy backed the coating off another project that didn't meet a minimum)

Yeah, now that I did this I started the ball rolling. I half way done with a SSP, and in the process of a oil catch can. Probably do some shifter bushings while I'm at it if I get the ambition to take apart the car to make measurements.

haha, that seems like a lot of work. Thats the other thing I would be worried about selling them. I dont want to get in trouble with Haltech on here. I will have to look into that more too.

The catch can will not be cheap the way Im planning on doing it. Big block of billet aluminum all cleared out. More of a decorative piece than a cost effective one. I will post up a picture of the model when I get a chance.

So while Im looking into this making a knob thing. Would anyone be interested in a stainless steel version? It would probably look like the silver knob in the first 2 pictures.

So total cost to me was $0, just time, which I have a fair bit of.

I guess let me know what you guys think. (sorry for the shitty cell phone pics)

You could always just make an "insert" for the shift tree, like JBR. If you can find a place that will sell you them cheap (google/ebay), then you could go that route, instead of painting it yourself.

Or like others have said, have an option for no paint haha

It looks as good as the TWM I paid $116 for. How long did it take, start to finish not including painting?

I have a JBR Special Edition knob that I love but that looks really good. My 0.02 would be to offer it raw and tell people to paint or powdercoat it OR get a handful powdercoated and then sell them. I think it would be nicer than paint personally. Either way great work and good luck.

Total time wasnt that long really. Machining out the profile was maybe an hour because I did it by hand, and was just kinda winging it. I didnt know what shape I wanted so I just kinda went with what felt right. One of the guys in my shop ran the CNC pattern in the top, that took maybe 10 min. The black chrome plating took a couple weeks to get back.

Im debating on making a handful, but making one for myself and making one for others is such a different thing. For myself I can handle little imperfections or issues, but I would have to make sure everything was perfect if I were to sell them.

You can see in the 3rd pic that in the shift pattern corner below the "1" there is a thinner area of chrome that isnt completely black. Thats something I can deal with, but I would be worried about selling.

I have mad props for people like Jamie who can put in the time and effort to do things so right every time. It takes major commitment.

All that being said, there seems to be a fair bit of interest, so I will still be looking into getting a small number made up. May take a bit of time though.

You can just put the paint in the recesses of the engraving and wipe off the excess.

Another cool trick is to emboss your shifter patteren.

Machine the parts:

Get the color done, anodize in this case:

Fly cut about a .001 off the top:

install:

Thats what I ended up doing, but I had to actually do it with a piece of cardboard to keep the towel flat, because it would sink in to the groves and pull out paint at some points.

Thats actually pretty neat. It wouldn't work for this knob even if I cut it different because its plain carbon steel and would rust. But, I will keep this in mind for future projects.
