Mazda said themselves that the speed 6 was not intended to compete with the Evo and STI. And comparing the automotive landscape of 2015 and beyond to 2006 is pointless. In 2006 the Evo and STI were hitting their peak popularity. In today's market the Evo has become a victim of a company trying to present a green image and Subaru looks like it laid an egg imo on the new STI. If Mazda made the 3 awd and increased power just slightly from the DISI it'd stand alone in the hot hatch segment. It'd destroy the ST to the point of not being fair comparison and it'd steal customers from Subaru that still want a hatch (the new STI is sedan only) with awd. I would be willing to wager that a majority of buyers that could afford a gen 1 or 2 speed 3 for 25-26k would gladly fork over 28-29 for an awd variant actually meant to challenge the STI from the factory. Don't get me wrong guys, I love fast and cheap, but when the GTI and ST can be over 30k and selling well we can't expect Mazda to ignore that forever.

TBH I don't think they need to change anything with the ms3

they should put all the R&D in a new RX that would blow the doors off the FRS/BRZ

I don't really care if the new RX doesn't blow people's doors off, since most people who buy those cars are focused with the driving experience and handling.

I want Mazda to throw all the R&D into the new RX so it doesn't drink oil and be more fuel efficient than a V10 supercharged trunk!

I would love to see that, but I don't ever think we'll see a fuel efficient rotary engine in our lifetime.

Guys, guys.
Wait and see what happens with Russia before you start socking away cash for a 2018 model year.
You might all be tied up in WWIII.
It's pretty crazy that Germany hosted the Olympics before WWII...

I realize this is just speculation but, what about their current racing development? The clean diesel motor won almost every GX race last year (yes I know there were only two manufacturers) and they are doing well this year. IIRC its 300-310 HP*, and Mazda has been planning to release this motor in the US.

Diesel is definitely in Mazda's house of cards. The issue is not power but emissions. Mazda's aiming to outperform in both fuel economy and power. And either approach could get them there while preserving the $25K entry point.

I remember when all the car companies were trying to compete with each other when the speed3/6 first came out. You had the Speed3's, SRT-4's, GTi's, Cobalt SS's, WRX's. EVO rally art which still came turbo but a water downed version of the normal EVO but at a price to compete with the rest, Mini Cooper S. I would like to see another competition between the manufacturers like that again. With Honda Rumor to be bringing the 2015 Civic Type-R to america for the first time that will by coming from the factory with a Direct injection Turbo V-Tec engine also another first for them it'll be interesting to see if they do and how others will respond with Subaru still pushing another year WRX and for the performance and price not a whole to to compete with. I would buy a AWD version in a heart beat though but AWD hasn't really been a mazda thing.

I have the unmistakable feeling that Mazda is going to post up and recon for the next couple of years. They need the sales from the new miata and the 3 to really solidify a place for other performance models.

I still believe that an awd speed3 would be unnecessary, Ford would have done so already in the stateside ST. Awd is just too expensive per unit on low volume vehicles. A sorted fwd platform would be just fine with me. I can't count the number of times I've seen awd cars with inept drivers get bested by fwd at autox events. Seeing this first hand will immediately make you question the additional money spent on awd.

I'm really waiting the NEW SPEED3.

I test drive the new WRX and WRX STI 2015 today ... and over my tuned MAZDASPEED3 2008 ... I will wait news from mazda and this MAYBE AWD NEW DISI TURBO SKYACTIV etc etc.

I know that feeling - back when I had my Eagle Talon TSi AWD with MBC, I test drove the "new" LT1 Trans Am, a $43K Supra, Mitsu 3000 GT VR-4.. all those cars did was give me an appreciation for what I already had.

There have been some issues with fluctuating Cetane ratings causing some pretty severe issues in that motor in Europe. The diesel in the US is not to their liking is my guess. Emissions is what will make so that there is a very small chance to ever see a rotary engine again either.

Mazda hit a homerun with the gas Skyactiv for the most part, missing with their other engines at the moment IMO.

I don't see the point in looking forward to new FWD turbo cars if you have a speed3 because you'll be starting all over again. You'll likely save money and be faster just building your current vehicle.

That logic suggests that everyone should be buying cheap older cars and modding them to today's go-fast standards. Unfortunately all things have a limited shelf life. And now that the 2.3 has been phased out, we all know that certain parts will be harder to come by as the years go on. Let's not forget the gremlins that surface as the miles accumulate. And many of us with less free time for our cars as we get older.

I'm of the opinion that it's better to start with a capable platform than trying to keep up with an outdated one. Based on what I've seen with the new base 3, the suspension layout alone will be worth the switch IMHO.

I did some backroads driving with a friend of mine in a base model Auto 3. Even on shitty all season tires he was destroying these roads. I'm amazed at how composed the new 3 is. Gives me hope for a future Speed version.

Nice first post. Also, this very legitimate article says the 2018 mazdaspeed3 will have 153 horsepower.

Dude Mazda unfortunately already said they have no plans to release another speed. If it proves true I may never see myself in a Mazda again.

The same guy that sold me my 2009 ms3 who still works at the same dealership who comes to my coffee shop often, just told me last week that there will be a 2018 mazdaspeed 3 in ALL WHEEL DRIVE. yes. I don't think my guy would lie to me but I'm really hoping he wasn't. this was literally last week.

I would even be ok with more of a luxury take since Mazda is going for more of the upscale handcrafted approach now. Put the new turbo 2.5 from the CX-9 into the 3 or the 6 and maybe add a few more unique features and pitch the car as an upscale offering.

The new 3 and 6 have great technology, features and handling - they just need a bit more power to compete with Audi, VW, BMW and so on.

I highly doubt it. The platform only existed because Ford wanted a test bed for its Ecoboost. In 2013, Ford sold off its shares in Mazda. 2013 was the last year of the speed. I'm also doubting Mazda has any intentions of competing with the European luxury sedan market, I believe the company has already found its niche in being a cheap, reliable, but higher quality alternative to Honda, GM, and Ford. Also 2018 is less than a year away, and there are zero signs of any patents, testing, or prototypes.

I don't know about that one man. I'm hoping you're correct but I doubt it. Usually by now there is atleast concepts, or some sort of "spy shots" out by now. Or a confirmation that it's around. Plus if a dealer would know, so would we. The public usually finds out before dealers.

Don't hold your breath for any Mazdaspeed vehicles anytime soon. It's not gonna happen. But if it does, it needs to be RWD or AWD & have at least 350 HP IMO.
