So is that right? Is it really for when the car was sold or from when it was built? Do you guys think I should talk to another dealership?

No it starts from when it was first sold. To a consumer not a dealer. Go back to the dealer and show them the car fax. Or call Mazda North America headquarters and tell them what's going on.

A car can't be sold on it's built date, it still has to be loaded on a truck and shipped to dealer lot, doesn't it?

Question, and I apologize if this was already answered, as I didn't read through the entirety of this 11 page thread BUT,
I just bought my MS6 last week and it approaching 68k miles. No smoking turbo and no VVT start up noise.
Should I have it replaced anyway as a precaution since I'm under 70k?

It's gotta be bad to get replaced. By now, 84 months since first sold may be what says you are SOL anyway.

You re the first to mention it. If it exists, dealer has it and will take care of it, form-free.

Maybe... These tsb's don't work for Australia... According to Mazda here there is no known issue with smoking turbos or vvt's so it's never done under warranty...

I'll post my video here since there are plenty of people that have heard VVT problems. Only happens after warming up and upon giving light throttle. Sound comes from the EM, not the passenger side, where I thought VVT would come from.

Brought my 09 ms3 to the nearest service center yesterday, mileage in: 69800. Had a slight rattle on cold start that just recently developed so I figured what the hell, may as well get it checked. They called me and told me the noise I was hearing was normal but they could pull off the valve cover for an extra 35 bucks for the vc gasket on top of the 145 diagnostic charge and inspect it fully. I said fuck it, it's worth it, now I'm getting a new chain and vvt actuator all covered under the SSP due to the vvt actuator notches not aligning properly. If you're under 70k miles get that shit checked before its too late!

I have no rattle but coming up on 80k I am wondering if I should start thinking about doing VVT. I still have good compression (180s). Id have to destroy a perfectly good engine but also really don't want to do it...I would almost rather pull engine and put a new one in and put mine in my other MS6 after doing VVT.

Other people that have not done it/had it done and still have no noise?

After reading a lot of threads, I started to get super paranoid about having this issue. After taking my car to the dealer to let them take a listen, they also showed me a vehicle with the issue. Mine was nothing close to what it was making. I've just crossed 100K miles and still no rattling like the one I heard.

FYI that dealer quoted me $1400 to get a new VVT installed along with all the other timing components.

Did you get a warranty history on your vehicle from mazda? I did that when I bought CX7 and VVT had been done on that. Call them and they will send you one.

Bought it from a private seller. Luckily the dealer isn't that far, going to call or stop by soon. Turbo's good, but I do hear the rattle.

Is that US funds? That's a fucking ripoff. $1200-$1300 tops for VVT and chain.

First, if chain is rubbing the valve cover, stop driving. Take off valve cover and look for rubbing on it.

The VVT itself will knock when cold, starting for about 3-5 seconds, and go away.

You need a new dealer.

Yeah I knew it was a rip off here on Long Island it seems most mechanics and dealers near me are con artist when it comes to repairs. But yeah now I'll take a closer look.

I was just told by the dealer that im getting the VVT fix covered under warranty on my 08' MS3 with 75,000 kms. Says it could be the tensioner and its not covered in the warranty. If they tell me the tensioner is still good, should I replace it anyways seeing that everything else is getting done? Im guessing i should and its a matter of time before it goes too??

If your tensioner is worn out and you don't have VVT problems I'd be amazed unless you've already had the work done 100k ago and didn't replace the tensioner. Argue that they should replace the tensioner for free if they touch any of your other timing components. But if they suck and won't, you should still definitely pay to get the tensioner replaced while they're in there if your VVT is bad.

Id just worry that they will say it was not VVT it was tensioner so you have to pay for everything.

He said the VVT has already been approved by mazda and its getting done...chain etc. Just the tensioner might be the issue and its the only thing not covered. Ill post update with total cost and everything that got done.

Just got the car back now. The entire VVT kit was done under warrany...wasnt going to replace the tensioner under warranty so I said replace it anyways. $154.98 for the chain tensioner and $54.50 for half hour labour. Total bill was $229.63(CDN) with taxes.
