it looks like since the t6(5w40) is heavier than recommended (5w30), it's better to use this oil in hotter climate... im here in IN, it's really hot in summer but really cold in winter......... though it looks like almost the whole forum agrees the t6 is the best im having a hard time determining if the oil is a good fit to my location... bucker is located in alabama and i also see some guys from TX and those are all warm places. any inputs?

Pennzoil Platinum in the winter and will now be using Rotella T6 for the summers.

I'll be sure to post my UAO on my current PP from this past winter.

I just changed to Pennzoil Ultra 10w30 for the summer and will run the 5w30 in the winter. I just think the Rotella is a little heavier at temp than I want right now and I also don't want Mazda to give me any crap if I ever need any warranty work. I can absolutely see them saying that I used too thick of an oil and it caused whatever issue. Outside of warranty, if I still have the car, I may give it a try, but I think the Pennzoil Ultra meets my needs at this time.

Not exactly, they say to run 5W40 as a temporary measure to stop the smoking turbo.
That said they acknowledge that running 5W40 is safe on your engine, in fact I would say that their recommendation to run 5W30 is most likely motivated by fuel economy reasons more than protecting your engine.

You know half the time they (dealership/company) will screw you any way they can for the particular situation. If the manual doesn't say 5w40, you use it, and something goes wrong, there are plenty of dealerships that would/will use that against you. Given how decent the Pennzoil seems to be in regards to these cars (even though it is more expensive), I'd rather just use that for now and know they can't throw issues around what oil I use back at me in the future.

I am coming up to my next oil change and would like to switch to rotella. How is it in cold weather driving? Safe to use in Minnesota weather conditions?

I just switched to Rotella last wednesday, and holy crap batman. I could tell a slight difference, as the motor was working a HAIR harder, but now, i have almost no KR durring normal driving (used to have to drive for 10-15min out of boost, other wise i got .7-3.5 KR durring normal accel.)

Definitely going to stay with it throuhout the summer, and then see how it does in a CO winter.

That's not it at all.
You guys are just suffering from sever placebo effect.
The only way your gonna tell the difference, is if your interval has been stretched three times to long, or if the crank case is completely empty.
But from one oil to another in the very small viscosity range? Not a fucking chance.

^ If you can't tell the difference between crap thin oil and a quality, true full synthetic at a similar or thicker rating, then you are the one suffering from something........

Just because you can't tell the difference, doesn't mean other people are not more observant or sensitive. If you don't notice any kind of difference going from a dino 5w30 to a 5w40 full synthetic then you should probably just trade your car in on a Prius and call it a day.

Hahaha. Feeling the difference between one oil to the next is like noticing that your car is faster after a five pound dump.

feeling if your car is faster? lol wut

"unleash hp,..." wow...

what you can feel is how smooth or rough your ride is after a thousand miles or so..

ive said it 15 times now..

after 1500 miles on Mobil 1 the motor felt a lil rough..

after 3000+ on Rotella or VR-1 the car felt like it had just got a fresh oil change.

IMO that's the only real thing you will notice from one oil to the next...

I noticed a huge difference when I switched to a lighter weight oil. The engine revved up quite a bit faster.

So this next oil change, I'm not replacing the oil at all. No oil will obviously = faster! I know this because I can feel it.

Awww......you want me to sent you a cupcake to make you feel better about being wrong so much and having no other means of dealing with it other than calling people a brownie to make yourself feel better about being ignorant? Let me know. I can send you a nice pink one with sprinkles; yellow cake with strawberry frosting!!!

And yeah, a 5w40 will be thicker at operating temp than a 5w30.......

As well, if there were not differences than any 5w30 or 5w40 would provide the same amount of protection as any other 5w30 or 5w40. Different oils also shear more than others, offering less wear protection and a thinner film/coating/barrier. Just because you appear ignorant, angry, and lacking social skills, don't drag others down with you...

Have a nice day.

Yes, but as you just stated, you feel a difference that is due to different oil being in the car...

The only way I think you would be able to tell is if your oil was so sheared, so fuel diluted that you're getting bad metal metal contact. And if that's happening then youre going to have bigger issues. On none of my changes or any car have I felt there is some real difference. If there was a difference like i said you're damaging shit.

Tell you what. I would bet 100 dollars that if someone unknowingly changed your oil....let's say I told you it would happen this month...and you drive your car everyday. I would bet you could not pick the day it was done any more then statistically speaking.

Had you just visited the UOA sticky thread, you'd get all the answers you wanted regarding what oils work best for this motor.

It's an entire thread dedicated to used oil analysis results from many different manufacturers used in varying intervals and climates with extremely thorough technical data to verify it all.

We've been through this song and dance too many times with this platform. We don't listen to reps or buy into marketing promises. We buy parts and equipment based on factual evidence and test results. Not sales pitches. We're way past that.

The only things I have ever felt a real difference in (properly maintained vehicles) as far as oil changes are all the new tier 4 over the road Diesels(cat, cummins etc.) in my fleet and some of the really old tired Cats. Some of the older ones you can hear when shes ready for a lube change lol.

You cannot feel a difference in motor oil.

I am the most sensitive person to that kind of shit. I can tell you what RPM I shifted at without looking at the tach during wot runs.

I've been through 4 different brands of oil in varying weights with this car. There was no difference in feel. If there is, it's all in your head.
