Default Running Rich at Idle - P2188

Hey guys, car threw this code about a week ago, and I assumed it was running rich. Unplugged the battery reconnected it about a half hour later, and it cleared it for about a week, until today, when I stopped at a red light for about 20 seconds. I had access to a code reader this time, and got the code (P2188). Wondering what anybody has done to fix it, or is just a trip to the dealership? I read the other thread on this from like a year ago, but nobody ever gave a solid solution. I have no mods, and have done nothing in the past 6 months of owning the car to cause the light.

What year is your car? How long have you had it? How many miles does it have on it? Sounds stupid but have you checked your air filter and spark plugs? That's where I would start.

The canister purge valve has been a common problem for that code as well as the p2187 lean at idle code. It's a cheap part too.

Car is a '07 with about 106,450km. I have owned it since september of last year. I have not checked the plugs or filter, although i had the filter out about a month ago and it was looking pretty clean. The plugs are a maintenance action according to the dealership at 102k km's so I was planning on replacing those in the next week or two.

Is the purge valve something that can be checked easily?

The ECU modulates the purge solenoid to allow a specific amount of vacuum through during the Evaporative Emissions self-test. If the valve is stuck open it will allow unmetered air to be drawn into the intake manifold and cause a lean condition. If it is stuck closed it would most likely cause an Evap specific CEL (most likely P0455), so it's possible but I doubt your P2188 is caused by the purge solenoid. But to be sure you can remove it and wire the terminal that corresponds to the black/orange wire to any 12 volt source. Then have a wire coming off the other terminal. Try blowing through the solenoid with the free wire connected to nothing, then again when it is grounded. You shouldn't be able to blow any air through unless the wire is grounded.

Again, I'm sure a P2188 has been caused by a purge solenoid failure, but seems unlikely. That being said, it comes out easy and is tested easy, so it's a good place to start. After I would check out the MAF sensor. Check terminal tension and condition, wires for pinch/stretch condition, and sensor element for contamination. I've also heard of a faulty thermostat causing this code.

Good luck

It's a check valve thats normally closed, so if you take it off you shouldn't be able to blow through it in both directions.

I got 2188 from the purge valve( and quite a few others), also I could just tap mine with a wrench and it would close back up. rockauto.com I believe i paid under $16 for it.

Just had the purge valve out, and I can NOT blow through it in either direction. But as a rule of thumb whenever I work under the hood i always disconnect the battery, so in doing so it got rid of the check engine light. So not sure if I rattled the valve loose in the process of pulling it out, but it would make since if its only intermittently sticking, cause I can drive for a couple days now before the light will come back on. I did let the car idle for a couple minutes after and no light! Am going out now to check the MAF sensor.

Not being able to blow through it in both directions is good, but does not verify that it is opening when commanded on. It could be stuck closed. To check it you would have to activate it and see if it allows air through. You could wire it like I mentioned before or find a scan tool that can command it on and off.

Purge valve is good. Just had it on a 12v source and it works fine. MAF sensor wiring looks secure no kinks, and sensor itself looks clean! Plugs will be replaced Sunday!

Last night it threw another code - P300 - misfire cylinder 2. I'm assuming this is a result of it running so rich

Okay guys, replaced the plugs today and the car is running much smoother, and I believe we have solved the misfire problem. Still working on the rich at idle. Have some freeze frame data im going to attach below, if anybody sees anything really unusual please let me know. I have a feeling its the MAF sensor because the freeze frame date is saying the vacuum pressure is 8-9 inHg and workshop manual says 18+ and i put a suction gauge on it, and it read 21inHg.

Freeze Frame Date from P2188

Fuel system 1 status -------------------Closed Loop
Calculated Load Value ------------------23.14%
Engine Coolant Temp. ------------------190.4 F
Short Term Fuel Trim - Bank 1---------( -7.81%
Long Term Fuel Trim - Bank 1---------( -17.19%
Intake manifold Absolute Pressure-----9.18 inHg
Engine RPM------------------------------700.25 RPM
Vehicle Speed Sensor -------------------0.0
Ignition Timing advance----------------9.50 degrees
Intake air temp--------------------------57.20 F
air flow rate mass air flow sensor-----0.36 lb/min
Absolute throttle position---------------11.37%
Time since engine start-----------------355 sec

Looking for any other suggestions or input!

Your vac pressure is low as you mentioned. Double check for boost/ vac leak. Your LTFT's are way off. I have no idea what would cause this on a stock car. Sorry I can't offer more advice.

Just got my car back from the dealership tonight, they replaced all four injectors! Waiting to see if the code comes back.

If that doesn't fix it clean your MAF and try to find someone local that you could borrow one from to see if it's fucked up.

I have this problem on my stock 2007 MS3. Just that one code. Rough idle and too much fuel at idle if the engine is at operating temp. Every part has been changed and/or tested so I'm kind of stuck. They tell me the problem can't be fixed.

Our cars naturally run rich, but when mine threw the code it also starting randomly miss firing. They replaced my injectors and I haven't seen the code since. About a $2200 fix though!

It was a leaking injector for me, but since they had it apart and it was under warranty they replaced all 4. Haven't had any issues since! It was over a $2k job, only cost me my 200$ deductible

My problem started after they put new injectors in. I basically paid 2000 dollars to have my car screwed up.

i am having the same issue
I have a 2006 speed 6 and I have a Mazdaspeed CAI, Turbosmart dual port BOV, and a Magnaflow single exit CBE. And I have been having an issue with my CEL intermittently going on. When the CEL is on the code is p2188. It seems as though it usually comes on after accelerating pretty hard, and will stay on for a couple of days. Then after babying the car for a couple days to a week then the light will go out on its own. I also have noticed a hesitation at times when accelerating and backfiring when letting of the throttle to shift gears. I have tried removing the BOV and using the stock one, and the hesitation will go away and the backfiring will stop but the CEL issue continues. It is time for a smog and there is no way the car will pass with the CEL on. getting frustrated...

Pulled the same code.

- i retighten all clamps and looked over the hoses.
- removed the MAF and sprayed it with MAF CLEANER

Problem fixed.

Didnt have any lose of power or hesitation. Would recommend it to anyone who experienced this.

I started getting this code when I flashed my car with an off-the-shelf map from cobb. I think this is because the computer isn't used to getting that much more fuel. It would come on and off all the time with no identifiable pattern but Iv'e ran the map for 3 months and I don't get it anymore and I didnt do anything, I just let the computer learn it and it learned that everything is running fine.

I have an 08 speed 3 with a sri and an accessport and I got the codes PCM, p2188, IC, and u2064. I got it right after I filled my tank and I am trying out the economy tune to see what kind of mpg I can get. I filled up the day after I loaded the tune and then the code came on. Plus when I loaded the tune it gave me a message saying "this map either lacks or has dated support for this feature. Re save this map in the latest version of accesstuner to add AP adjustment support or contact customer support." Now the code still loaded so I just thought it was an outdated tune that still worked but now idk if it may have caused the codes or not. So what does the message mean and what do my codes mean?

Load previous map and clear codes then see if they come back. I can almost guarantee they wont. I would not run the economy map. If you want good gas mileage sell the speed 3 and get a fiesta.

Ive had this too rich at idle situation for a couple weeks now, and I've tried everything my LTFT is at -16 and STFT is at -15 at idle, I checked purge valve, tune, MAF, leaks in bypass hose and changed hpfp pumps/ internals, still got the code. Some days it runs more rich than other days, but it's always running extremely rich, at this point I am thinking it's an O2 sensor, maybe the downpipe turbo gasket, idk spark plugs or an open injector? I'm just stuck and do not know what to do at this point or know how to find my problem, my car does not run any differently seems to idle normally, AFR is good, hpfp levels at idle and wot are good. Anything helps

Pull the dipstick and inhale lightly. Faint smell of gas or really strong?
