also when the car is off the gears and mechanisms are still since there is no power delivered from the motor to the input shaft, clutch is not needed because separating the motor and transmission will not change the static condition of the transmission's mechanism. so to answer your question.... it makes zero difference to engage or disengage the clutch when shifting a car that is turned off , because the only reason for pushing the clutch in when the car is on is to slow down the transmission enough to be able to engage the next gear.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Technically you can change gears with no clutch when the car is running too, if you match the rpm and don't grind them! What's the point of shifting gears when the car is off, are you practicing your 2-3 shift? |

| Not Ranked : 0 score well, the only reason for doing this i would say is if you're in a dealership and want to play around with the tranny to see how it feels. One time the guy at the mazda dealership yelled at me.. i laughed and told him i drive and speed and he shut up and went back in his office. (this dealer couldn't even sell speeds haha) There is no reason the tranny would get hurt. Nothing is moving. If you break something then i'd highly suggest you don't buy the car... i mean, if a tranny gear can't slide in under no pressure... what happens when you use it with the engine placing all it's power through it?

| Not Ranked : 0 score I disagree a bit here... If nothing is moving in the trans and the clutch is not pushed in, then the syncros are not able to do what they normally do which is Match Speed... Seeing how there is Zero Speed, when you force the shifter to a gear and the clutch is locked, it hits and has to be pushed left or right on the shaft. The Selected gear has to move rather than just shifting the clutch a bit Either way, it's not massive damage, but I ask, why do it in the first place...

| Not Ranked : 0 score Gears meshing properly while driving normally will cause more wear or "damage" as it may be, than shifting with the engine off and displacing the gears with a bit of force. Last edited by Tokay444; 02-03-2011 at 04:52 PM. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Why do people get into arguments that they can't back up and then come on the internet to try and justify their insanity? If you can't explain why, it's more than likely you have no clue what you're talking about. If you don't know what you're talking about.... shut up.

| Neutral : +1 score I have one word for all of you guys. Simplify. Why would anyone in their right mind do this? When you shut the car off and you're ready to exit, a lot of people like to leave the car in gear (usually first or reverse) while parked. It's the equivalent of putting an automatic in park, in a sense. I do this all the time. If I forget to put it in gear right after I shut it off and I've already exited the car, I'll just push the shifter into first without getting back in the car to push the clutch in. There is no resistance. It glides right in, just like my cock into hot MILF pussy. Ya know, a lot of you guys are really bright, but you tend to over think things a bit. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score My guess is the guy got into the OPs car and moved the shifter around when the car was off without pushing in the clutch. The OP most likely freaked out because someone was molesting the only thing he's ever had that was worth owning. When the OPs friend asks him why he just had a massive coronary for nothing, the OP proceeded to tell his friend a magical tail of unicorns and wrecked transmission with out any idea what he was talking about. Then OP comes onto MSF to hope that someone could justify his fairy tail so that his friend wouldn't not call him out on his douche-baggery.

| Not Ranked : 0 score [QUOTE=dkapetansky;716957]After reading this, I got real curious, so I ran outside, hopped into my '07 MS3, and started checking this out. Basically, chriscarron is right. I was able to upshift in any gear, without even touching the clutch, and with no weird noises from the drivetrain. Downshifting was a different story, though; I was never able to get into a lower gear without using the clutch. So maybe now I'll save a smidgeon of clutch friction material for posterity. Glad it worked for you, sometimes I do it for fun but not that much, after all, there's no point lol On another note, I was at the dealer earlier test driving a new speed3, and the salesman started the car, shook the stick left to right like 10 times, I guess to check if it was in neutral, then put it in first drove it out of the parking lot, then put it back to neutral and did that shit again....WTF is with people who shake the stick back and forth, is it really to make sure it's in neutral or is it some kinda macho move " oh look I can drive stick babyyy"...seriously drives me nuts, if some of you guys do this, why??? |

If you see people doing it now... I would say your guestimation is pretty on... either isn't a very experience driver or thinks it looks cool cuz he saw it on some movie.

...go figure. My uncle would actually do that while in the tractor out in the field. But Dash08 pretty much got it. That's the only reason people would even care to put the car in gear after it's been turned off.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Stick jiggling is a terrible habit. I admit that I tend to do it subconciously sometimes. No homo.

I do pull it to the left to make sure it's in neutral before i let off the clutch when i'm parking. but one pull to the left is all you need. any more than three and your playing with yourself

I wiggle the shifter left and right also. It's habit. Back in England I didn't have to depress clutch to start the car so I fit were in gear it would lunge forward or back. The tranny is a noisy beast on the ms3 for sure. Just today turned car off in garage and pressed down on the clutch and changed 1 to 2 to 3 man the noise I could hear! Not for the faint hearted.
