| Not Ranked : 0 score You can see the heat treatment by the button on the vvt actuator.

| Neutral : +1 score Isn't it possible to take it to any dealer and have them run the VIN? That ought to show any work done while it was still under warranty.

| Not Ranked : 0 score As long as the job was done by the dealer.... The older VVT unit was prone to crack but even if you have an updated VVT, it doesn't mean your chain cannot get slack and gring your valve cover....I think my late 2007 ms3 had the updated unit and my VC had still heavy marks when i opened it at about 90k miles.... You may remove the VC and check it for marks. You can check for chain slack from the vc cap when the car just stopped with remaining oil pressure... I don't know if a snake cam could be used to see how much extended is the chain guide extender from the top....???

| Not Ranked : 0 score I replaced my VVT actuator with a new post TSB unit and yes there was a distinct dark blue mark on the front face where they apply heat treatment to an internal pin to make it last longer. I did all my work on my 2007 CX7 at 55k miles, and the timing chain was already very noisy, and would be especially noisy during initial engine startup of the day for the first 3-5 seconds until oil would quiet the valvetrain and chain noise somewhat. The chain tensioner was already fully extended and the chain was already loose and beginning to grind on the valve cover. After installing the new parts, the engine sounded like new again and today at 95,000 miles it still sounds good, no noises from chain or VVT. If your engine has 87,000 miles on it and is not making any noise, chances are it was already repaired and most probably the improved VVT actuator, new chain and tensioner were installed. My 2 cents. |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score thanks everyone for replies. Good idea with the dealership, I will check that out. the car has a fairly full mazda digital service record so that bodes well. I had a proper listen on a cold start up with the hood up today and absolutely no vvt noise so I am confident its not about the immediately blow up! |
