Default ATP GTX2871R

Is this page an error, or is this really available?

Or is there a thread somewhere I don't know about and I'm re-posting like a brownie.

GTX2871R Bolt On Turbo Kit for Mazdaspeed3 (2007 thru 2014) : atpturbo.com

Code: ATP-MS3-020
Price: $2,050.00

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
GTX2871R bolt on turbo kit for Mazdaspeed3. Garrett GTX2871R turbo with ATP proprietary exhaust housing and internal wastegate is ready to bolt up to the Mazdaspeed3 exhaust manifold and downpipe! Includes all coolant and oil connections to connect the turbo to the factory lines. The turbo is capable of producing over 500 crank HP as configured with supporting mods and proper tuning.

Does not include 3" inlet pipe and 3" downpipe necessary to complete a "kit" in order maximize the turbo. The GTX2871R is the best spooling turbo on the market capable of achieving 500HP. Highly recommended for a very broad powerband with a lot of "area under the curve".

For comparison, here's the ATP page for the GTX2867R turbo we all know and love:

Correction: Garrett gtx2871r is availaible...

Assuming a X71mm is making the flow of an old 76mm, it would be like a gt2876r...(A tiny turbine to drive a large compressor) I would be afraid of surge and heat....
Could it be better on high altitude where the atmospheric pressure is low?

The gtx2971 is out as well... In case the 2871 is too small and 3071 is too big...

I found this on Garrett's website: Products | Turbochargers
So it definitely looks legit.

Humm right my bad...i checked their website so manny times and curiously when you start a search beginning by GT28, it is not showing the GTX28 then classed it before the GT28 even if it can make more flow...?

ok nice, as i said my english is terrible and i though you were really negative on it. I still like that car even if it is slow vs the speed but the sound of the KL reving high is nice to hear.

Back to subject, i run a gt2871r catless and when i was still running the mazdaspeed accessory CAI 2.64'', the turbo was surging at spool up in cold weather. it is ok now with a full 3.25'' intake but I would preffer a GTX3071R over a GTX2871r to make the same power at lower boost pressure/temperature/octane but i may be wrong too...

Would it happen to of been to someone on here? (:

I'd love to see some real data to compare the GTX2867r and the GTX2871r

Although the 67 will probably fit my needs better.

Fingers crossed for a build thread (:

What would your guess be on the performance differences between these two?

look at the compressor map,...You will probably be running between 2.5 to 3 compression ratio up top (Maybe a little more) so you can see the flow difference from the 2.

Hehe thanks for doing the leg work on that, don't happen to know how to do an overlay do you? (:

I also ask Edge in particular, because I remember JP commenting he thought the 2867 was the perfect DD turbo. Which the idea of appeals a lot to my needs.

Ok so the gtx2871r outflows a gt3071r from the comp maps. I am guessing spool will be about the same as a gtx2867, faster than a bnr s3 or a gt2871, because gtx wheels historically have spooled faster than gt wheels.

If both use the same ATP turbine housing for the same GT28 turbine and the same design of billet 3D compressor wheel but one has a 4mm smaller wheel to turn, it will for sure spool a little faster...

But faster than what ?.... Do you do autocrossing or any track that really need instant response ? I run a old fashion gt2871 + a quite long fmic piping that should make it more laggy than both of these gtx and it is just perfect for D D. Sometimes it call to downshift a little bit more than would a k04 but it is just better for the engine bloc to use hp instead of low end torque. The car will remain D D and i'm looking for a bigger one.

What would make me choose the x67 over the x71 is more about the goal to reach. If you don't want to upgrade the fuel system with a 5th-6th injector and wanna keep the stock rods etc. I won't go x71 when the x67 can brings you there in a easier way. Yes you can use a x71 and limit it to the boost but if you don't plan to unleash it, why going this route...?

I don't have any direct refferences to say that but imo, driving a 550hp potential compressor with the gt28 turbine motor seems a little bit underpowered. I imagine the initial spool to be on the far left side of the map because the exaust flow restriction made by the small turbine opening. Again, i may be wrong on this, and if someones have test results from a gtx2871r running on our 2.3 engine, i would be very interrested to read about it. Maybe using an anti-surge comp. housing would just make it fine but when i checked to install a x71 cold side to replace my 71r i ended up looking for GT30 options instead...

Another point i read here is about boost controling of a x71 compressor. The complaints from tuners was for the GTX3071r IWG. IT seems to be harder to tune for a stable boost curve because of the small IWG that tend to creep. Imo, using that compressor size on an a smaller turbine will just make this worst if i understand it correctly...If you still choose it, i would go EWG.

Based off what has already been posted, the GTX2871 is the turbo I'd choose between that and the GTX2867. It flows a little more air up top without sacrificing spool which should allow more compromise. Compromise is what a lot of people look for when choosing a turbo. They need it to spool fast and be capable of a lot of power. This turbo seems to offer both...

That sounds awesome, I don't see the option on Edge, but on ATP, they offer an anti-surge machining option. If you were running it on just 92 and no additional fuelling do you think the anti-surge would be be beneficial at all on a turbo this size?

I personally would run the antisurge. It is just an extra little measure of protection against turbo failure from having air trying to go out the way it came in.

Shit, I was looking for an ewg gtx30 but this seems to be the perfect compromise for my street needs and a (for now) stock block.

I am looking at the "cartridge" option available at ATP to update my GTX2867R to either this GTX2871r or GTX2971r now that I am building my motor. The 2867r is a great little turbo but I need a little more now that I can...

I'm curious about the options from your x2867 because it would need work/changes on the housings...Vs the price of a complete brand new larger one...Especialy for 2971 where both wheel diameter are different. On ATP website, it says the GT29 is a direct replacement for GT28 but since one is 54mm when the other is 56mm turbine wheel, i would expect machining is needed ?

You should be able to swap the old hotside with the new compressor as a drop in upgrade if I understand the upgrade path correctly.

My 2867 is being inspected under warranty, I am expecting the canned ATP answer that it needs rebuild not covered under warranty. That is when I will talk to them about upgrading if is really possible.

Hello Bryan,

Thank you for contacting us.

The GTX2971R turbine wheel is larger than the GTX28 and smaller the than GTX30 turbine wheels. The GTX2971R is not compatible with a GTX28 or GTX30 turbine housing.

In regards to the direct drop-in replacement, we offer turbine housings for the GTX2971R which utilize the same external dimensions and flanges as the GTX28 and GTX30 series. As a result you may interchange a complete GTX2971R turbo into an existing GT28, GTX28, GT30, or GTX30 setup.

Let us know if the above requires further clarification.

Thank you
There's the email I got from ATP when I inquired about the GTX2971 a little while back. So in short, no.

I call BS to ATP.

My turbo 2867 New GTX2867R dual ball bearing turbo with ultra high flow compressor wheel featuring Garrett 10-Blade technology . **Turbine Housing is sold separately and is the same as one used on GT2871R using 53.86mm 76 trim turbine wheel. .

New GTX2871R dual ball bearing turbo with ultra high flow compressor and featuring Garrett 11-Blade technology. 560HP potential flow.

**Turbine Housing NOT included and sold separately.

The GTX2871R utilizes the same turbine housing as GT2871R and all GT28 series turbochargers with a 53.9mm and 76 trim turbine wheel.

So from their webpage I should be able to get the GTX2871 compressor and mate it to my turbine...

2867 to 2871 would work. I was only referring to the 2971.

As long as he replace x67mm cold side hosing by a x71.xmm housing. You would need a complete turbo exept atp hosing not just a chra cartridge.

my understanding is when you buy one brand new, you can swap parts because they re use them as new but later on, there is no real direct replacements for different size or neither from x and older series because machined x wheels seems to be half a mm larger.

they forgot to tell 67mm compressor wheel is smaller than 71 ...

He was only talking about being able to mate his current hotside to any GT28 cold side, at least that's what I thought. If he's only getting the CHRA then I agree.

Just make sure you talk to the tech guys at ATP and not sales for questions regarding this subject.

I saw it was an option on the site to get an EWG exhaust housing as well. Could you confirm this @EdgeAutosport.com; ?
