haven't taken apart yet, but it looks to be where the coolant in at the bottom of the turbo meets the bigger coolant line. Appears to be leaking right above the wga. so will take of the intake side and while i'm there make me a recirc tube for the inlet.

Couple questions:

1) So I assume it's the lower cost up front on a Journal bearing turbo along with the cheaper rebuild & balance ability when they go bad that outweighs all of the the benefits of running a comparable in performance BB turbo? Or is it that these BB GT and GTX Mazda specific kits having the bolt up Mazda specific exhaust housings drive up the cost over comparable standard V-band journal bearing turbos?

2) Please PM me the price on a GT3071 kit. Depending on the price difference with this kit it may be a good choice for me as I'm not looking for the top end #'s I would get with a GTX3071 over a GT3071 and apparently the GTX and GT 3071 models spool the same so hopefully I can save some dorra... Trying to decide between a BNR stg 3 and a GT3071 kit as I still want a quick spooling unit but feel the GT2871 is priced to close to the 3071 unit not to get a 3071 at that negligible price diff so it's either a BNR stg 3 or a GT3071 for me.

Thanks!

Thank you! I couldn't have said it better about the price difference between 2871 and 3071. You're right about the spool of the GTX but it will flow much more as you reach higher boost levels. Where the GT starts to level out in airflow, the GTX just keeps going further.

I've never felt a BNR Stage 3 but I'm willing to bet a 3071 feels so much more incredible, even at lower boost levels. The BNR would definitely spool faster but getting used to driving a big turbo showed me how much more I like the driveability of the car with not such quick spool up. It doesn't spool too much slower but the power curve makes it much smoother to accelerate. It doesn't just smack you in the face like the K04 or probly the BNR. Unless you have tons of power and then it still smacks you in the face but just a lot harder lol.

Being that im going to get back into Auto-X im thinking the GTX3071 will be the route i take. I mentioned beofer im looking for ~400 whp. Maybe more now . Anyways what about MAF size? Should i plan on going to a larger MAF? Or is the one on my short ram sufficient? Also i see a lot of the BT guys installing an EGT guage. Can i skate by without one if im running conservative boost levels?

Well the stock size maf will get you to right around 400 maybe a a little more. If you ever planning on going more then just get a big maf and cal it and re-tune. A 3071 imo would be a great turbo for this car due to spool time and using at auto-x. I auto x my car with the 3076 once with the atp hotside and it marginally slower then the k04 lol

As for running an egt gauge I havent run one in the 15k ive been BT and havent had an issue. I sure have lately beat the piss out of my car racing 135's,335's,s5's and all at heavy wot pulls for extended periods of times on (closed mexico roads of course) I also have a brass egt plug and its only rated for 1750* iirc and it has yet to melt into my turbo so I would say you should be ok.

So I am undecided on which size wastegate to run on my build. The other guys running the 5557 are using 44mm wastegates so I was going to run that route but in my build thread I was told to go with 38mm because there are plenty of guys with similar sized turbos using 38mm wastegates who have perfect boost control.

Now idk if the amount of boost determines what size to use but I plan on running at least 25psi maybe 26. if that helps at all.

I am getting my manifold reflanged this month and I need to decide which size to have the wastegate tube flanged to.

Now idk if the amount of boost determines what size to use but I plan on running at least 25psi maybe 26. if that helps at all.

I know what thread you are talking about its rigors. I never really read into why he needed to upgrade to the 44mm besides boost creep and I would have been almost certain the 38mm would have had no problem controlling that issue but I dont know all the details. @rigor was there any other reason you went with the 44mm besides the whole boost creep issue?

I think he was trying to troubleshoot his boost creep problems and he started with upgrading the wastegate. I was told he later found out what the issue was or something and it wasn't the wastegate. Idk for sure tho, let's hope he chimes in.

not rilly sure the problem, but the 38 mm wg will work but don't plan on running under 26 psi i have the bigger compressor, with the 4'' inlet, plus my wg is 90 degrees off the mani so flow isn't ideal, also the center of the collector hung way down, blocking flow to the wg from 2 cyls.
so i changed wg to 44mm and raised the center of the collector, and it was fine..

still couldn't run under 20 psi

and now i run 26psi so hmmm lol

if you look in the hole you see the collector hanging down

Yeah I have just the standard 5557, no 4" inlet. I'm having my mani reflanged and a wastegate tube welded on so ill have them make sure there's good flow going to it.

Thanks, wouldn't be from the help of this thread though lol. The build should be coming together a lot quicker now that I have everything planned/figured out and the holidays are over so my wallet can recoup lol.

Thanks!
I'm with this guy.. I'm not looking for anything crazy, so the benefits of a GTX over a GT don't really concern me too much (I'd even go with a 2871 BB turbo if the price was right), but I called BNR today and with the price of a stage III, it's almost worth it to go with an ATP. I know this has prob come up, but whats the life span of one of these BB BT's? I can't see me being very aggressive with a tune on a daily basis. This is my dd so I need to make sure I keep that in mind. I know a stock turbo at 20 psi will not last as long as I want. I would also need a bigger inlet pipe to switch over, so that also adds to da moneyz.. Does anyone offer a IP + BT package? I have all the other supporting mods, but that's the only thing I need really. Will any 4" inlet pipe work w my CP-e CAI. Or do I need to buy the CP-e one?

So I guess moral of the story is.. I need a price on a GT3071 + 4" inlet pipe. or a 2871 + whatever inlet pipe I need for that if I can't use my current one.

Well the best price for the 3071 is 1549.00 shipped. As for using any tip that will work without a problem on your cpe cai. You could realistically use your tip you have now just buy the 4''-2'' reducer coupler. The life span of these turbos is really unknown but ive read guys going 30k+ on them without a problem.

I only have 15k on my setup and I have yet to have a problem. The most important factor that seems to come up is reliability and I dd my car just like everyone else and just as long as you maintain your car you will have no problem with it. IMO this turbo is safer then the k04 because the boost doesnt come on so fast and you get all of that low end torque putting stress on your rods.

So maybe this has already been asked and I apologize, but I am thinking about doing a stock flange gtx3071 IWG. How difficult is it to port the IWG to allow for better boost control?

Fairly easy. Just remove the hotside (6 1/2 inch bolts) and take a dremel with the proper bits and go to town.

@Tomas is that your old hotside? Is that a crack at the top right side left of the stud?

I wanna upgrafe my rods before my build was thinking of going with eagle h beams. Would you guys recommend going rods + pistons or just rods? Also what am I going to need to supply the shop who's replacing them with? Gasket? Oils? Studs?

I know @driver311 is porting manifolds on the side, ported his own gtx3071, and may be available for porting the gtx3071 if you throw him a few bucks.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing LOL.
