it would spike at like 24 and settle 22-23psi. The torque was pretty high from the eth. I'd have to look at VDs, but I bet close to 400. I could occasionally break loose in fourth and third gear was useless.

DJ has a copy of my tune and is reviewing it just to make sure that I didn't make any glaring mistakes, and of course, he is always curious about shit like that anyway.

I think that if my head is ok, I might buy Joel's extra short block and do a mild build. Upgraded rods with stock pistons cuz i may have the hook up on the pistons for cheap... DJ gave me a brief idea of what needs to be done, and I'll talk to him more about it soon. He also has an engine shop book for the motor. I just want a build with more durability than stock, but because I DD and don't plan on running the best tires (cuz with all my miles they wear too quickly) I still don't really want anymore than 400whp.

Well thanks, but honestly (unless I'm in shock or some shit), I'm really not too bummed at all and although there will be major headaches and dolla dolla bills to be spent, I'm actually looking forward to the learning process.

Damn Keith, sorry to hear about that. Ya never like to hear about someone blowing an engine like that and it doesn't sound like you did anything wrong just prior to the incident. Its more likely a slow process weakening or bending of the rod over time until bam.

Seems the speeds tend to let go in cooler weather for some reason and I know load/TQ values are higher but not sure that alone is the cause. In the early days it was thought the combination of higher load values along with the load cap was the cause of blown motors but we have removed one of those variables.

Your LTFT values would indicate you were running richer which would make less power if anything so I don't think they are a factor in themselves.

BTW what PSI and or Load do you typically see i the same conditions as last night?

Edit: see your psi what load values do you see when that "spike" occurs?

There also MAY be a financial silver lining. APPARENTLY, at least for joel, who totaled his car last month (truck ran him off the road... he was not racing... if you have not heard), because he never used his extended warranty once, he was able to get it refunded... IDK, what the parameters are for that, but I'm gonna look into it, cuz there may be 2kish there.

load peaks at 3ish (skewed from eth) and boost sits around 23 w a peak not much higher than 24.

Shit if you have an extended warranty, you can probably get paid for a block and labor. Who is the warranty through? Even though you have BT, if it's not through mazda and it's an after market extended warranty, they just send an adjuster out and take a pic of the hole in the block.

did you see the new vent hole in the block and was it in the #3 cylinder location?

since you are vested in learning more it would be interesting to keep your hands on during the teardown to see if there are any other signs of wear that might give a clue as to the cause.

it may just be that in the end there will be no smoking gun per se and all you'll find are some bent/broken rods.

Were you running a MAP, Grimspeed IM or stock? I still feel that poor IM design leans out #3 to a dangerous level and why Mazda calibrated their DISI in such a rich condition to compensate.

Did you have an upgraded MAP? Or are you just reading boost off of a gauge?

Based on my results 24psi would be much more than 400wtq particularly at low temperatures and on an Eth mixture. I am load targeting about 400wtq am down to 18psi as it has been cooling off.

After seeing what @burn813 car did on 3 gallons of e85 I'm starting r see why on a bt its just not as viable as it is on the k04. 105 idc on 22 Psi @ only 5200 rpms.... That's no Buenos if u Ask me

I do hav an upgraded map, but I don't think I was making as much power as u and dano cuz my 60-100 times were a bit slower than danos anyway... In 4th, 60-100 was at 4.7 recently.

Power != torque. Acceleration is based on power, specifically power under the curve. I am making near 400whp, but keeping torque down using my brontosaurus boost curve.

Torque is ultimately what blows motors, not power. I am mostly curious because your tune and hardware was stable. Make sure to save the broken bits. I would like to do some failure analysis to make sure it wasn't a fatigue failure.

A single large event like hyrolock will tend to bend rods, fatigue would cause catastrophic failure.

Dyno axle fail (axle is still working on universal cv boot btw)
Snake oil fail
Clutch fail
Motor fail
If the built motor fails, I'm done lol!

Oh, wg fail too (remember, new bt, but stuck at 15psi!)

I'm sure that the build won't commence for at least a couple of weeks, if not more because:

1) Dustin is on vaca and has a set of pistons for me, and also helps like everyone else on here, so it may take him a bit of time to send them out

2) I am having my motor built by one of the most talented guys out there (has a shop car which is an old laser with a built motor with 300k+ on it). The only problem with him is that he moves slower than molasses and he has to wait on the pistons from DJ.

At this point, I don't think that my rods have been ordered, but papasmurf raised a point regarding machining the k1 rods which worries me. He says that they have to be machined perfectly (which I would expect), but his doubt makes me curious to know how hard it is to machine them perfectly? Can any compitent machinist do this, or should i look into a different set up?

and when the time comes, I will definitely give a shout out to NATOR IL (NATOR MO's brothas from different mothas) and see who can come down.
