Default My ZZB Experience and Upcoming Build

This is just to get a thread going for today. About 6 weeks ago while logging my engine decided it only need 3 connecting rods. I actually sent the log to @Lex; and he said it looked safe tune wise. I'd assume that it was just old and tired at 98k. Had the extended warranty when I purchased it 63k from a Mazda/Ford dealer in Albany. Called up my local dealer in Keene, NH as I have received great service from them. I had it towed with the mods in my sig on it because fuck these cold as New England winters with no garage. Luckily they have a hard one for my car there and the service manager assisted in the stocking out. Handed over oil change records and waited. Got the call today that it was denied. Which I fully expected when I found out that they wanted ECU freeze frame data. As of now I know I'm going Freekbuilt for sure. I'll be putting the log up tomorrow for your viewing pleasure of my engines last breath

THE GO FAST PARTS:

-JMF Intake Mani/Tapped for meth
-Bosch 3 BAR Map Sensor w/PNP Harness
-COBB 3-Port EBCS
-AP V3
-CS FP Internals
-Injector Seals and Stud Kit
- Scored an epic deal on a used ATP down pipe
-CX Racing IC piping
-Treadstone TR8 core
-Snow Performance meth kit w/safeinjection and flow gauge
-JBR 3.5" Intake w/4in turbo flange
-AEM AFR Failsafe
-Corksport cams
-Boost Junkyz stock location manifold

OTHER:
-Damond Motorsports Vented OCC
-HTP Battery Trunk Relocation (need room for activities)
-Damond Motorsports powersteering cooler
-RD Motorsportz crash bar
- @jbarone; Trilogy
-Prosport EVO series gauges. Hopefully the sending units hold up
-AUX fan controller
-A/C delete
-CS diff brace
-Transfer case bearing caps
-Spin on oil filter conversion w/ Prosport adapter plate
-GFB Respons BOV/BPV
-Damond Motorsports SSP
-WW Front motor mount and front diff brace
-Speedperformance TC bearing caps

SUSPENSION:
-H&R Springs paired with Koni shocks
-Corksport Rear camber arms
-Whiteline Rear sway bar
-Racing Beat rear endlinks
-AWR front endlinks
@CorkSport; front upper control arms
-Racing Beat front sway bar

Things I need:
-Engine (duh)
-Clutch (looking at the South Bend Clutch kit)
-Turbo (keeping an eye on the new BNR setup in the works)

I will be replacing any other worn parts also

I'm sure I am missing things on the need list. Plus there's always those surprises that come up

I don't have any photos of the real carnage but once i start taking it apart when spring arrives there will be photos. The hole is on the backside of the block

Great choice with the Freekbuilt option.

What components did you decide on for the build?

I'm Undecided on what turbo I want currently. I've got a few months to decide I'll be definitely be keeping the thread up to date on what my decisions are. My goal will most likely be around 400hp. I'll be checking youtube videos out for various turbos and reading the build threads on here.

Sorry about the shitty luck. Shoot me a PM when you do the install, I'll see if I can swing down and help turn some wrenches. Good luck man!

Thanks man. Fortunately I hung onto my Protege when i bought the speed so i have something to drive during the down time. More than likely the installation will take place spring of 2016. I'll be slowly buying parts until November when my work bonus comes into play.

Ha damn! I store my car for the winter, I'd be really sad if I had to go that long without mine.

Good luck with the build, wish I had a speed6 instead of fail wheel drive!

For reference, here is my built speed3 with a GTX3076r. Good luck with the research

Your list looks like your goals are way more than 400 hp. You should make that easy. I would think if that is all you want, you should go smaller turbo and have a flatter torque and hp curve....

Just my opinion

Should have the hunk of scrap pulled out this weekend finally. Taking my time since I have it haha. Then I'll work on dropping the rear sub frame so I can replace the shocks, do the diff mounts, and replace anything else that looks fucked. Prepare for carnage pics when I pull the engine apart.

You get any insight as to what caused the zzb/how or if you could have prevented it? Your build seems modest pre-zzb.

(and yeah i wanna see this monster once its built)

I'm not sure if I'll ever find the exact cause. I was doing a data log when it blew. E-mailed the log to Lex at Stratified since I was running and OTS+ map from them and everything looked good. I had 98k on it when it went. I'm not sure how it was treated the previous 63k miles but I stayed on top of the basic maintenance for the 35k I put on it.

Finally removed the scrap today. Now it's time to remove and cleanup the usable parts. Next up is dropping the rear sub frame to replace shocks, diff mounts, and probably a whiteline rsb

Finally pulled the head off today. Almost time to haul this pile of scrap to the scrapyard. Damage is snapped rod, chunk blown off of the crank cradle, 2 holes in the block, 2 intake valves snapped and a partridge in a pear tree.

You did it good. I don't suppose you'd like to post the log for those of us that are curious?

Datalog uploaded to OP. Beware it is rather long because I was trying to get the car home 3 miles on a dark cold rainy night in December with no safe place to stop. I already knew it was fucked.

Doesn't look like you were pushing it like everyone has said. KR just went to 5, AFRs tanked, etc, etc.... Looks like it still tried to run for 500 or so rpms

Interesting how fast your BATs go up when you're not flowing any air

Thanks for posting it up

Finished getting my canopy together this past weekend. If anyone needs good lighting I would recommend LED shop lights. Purchased on Amazon. Now when the weather sucks I can get to work on this thing. Next on my list is to upgrade the TC bearing caps, replace the pivot shaft seal , and some leaky old sensors on the transmission so that I can get them stored away

Well........I have a rebuildable long block now. Picked it up on Tuesday from a local member. Had low compression and roughly 100k when it was replaced by Mazda through a warranty. I'm assuming that It was either never modded or a really good stocking out job to get it replaced

Haven't updated this in a bit. It will be getting finished up by this time next year. Going to most likely be getting Shed Built (not sure on your user name here) later this year. Rear sub frame will be dropping soon to install all the new goodies. Also Go-Autoworks is now making exhaust manifolds for our platform now. Waiting for the new BNR turbo to be released also.

Pokes with stick. Is u ded?

I have acquired almost everything I need to finish this bitch. Just need to purchase the clutch kit and rear axles from DSS. Also need to make final arrangements to have the motor assembled. I don't have a clean area or the confidence to do assembly of the motor. May attempt a rebuild on my Protege. Something way less expensive than the MZR. Ended up replacing majority of the rear end parts because fuck New England winters. I have pics to upload at some point

Assembling the MZR motor is peanuts compared to other performance turbo motors, like the 2.7L V6 from the Audi B5 S4's......that one gives me nightmares.....

If you need a clean room, then you can buy a HEPA filter, purify the air in your kitchen, and assemble it in there. All of the parts will be clean minus some assembly lube, so use lots of gloves and keep a trash can nearby to contain the lube.

OR, you can drop the block off at the machine shop with the parts and have them assemble the entire rotating assembly. It shouldn't cost more than 500.
