Default Ziggyboy's BNR S4 Build

So as most of you know the S4 is on its way to mazdaspeed homes next week. I was one of those people who couldn't wait for dyno sheets and info before dropping the money to RPM during the preorder sale. While I eagerly await its arrival, I decided to start my build thread that will take place over the winter due to my speed3 being a summer car only. I welcome any advice on parts or ideas towards the build, you guys are the experts so lets drop all the info we can. At this time I plan on staying stock block so lets keep that in mind so you guys don't talk me into a full motor build.

Lots of pictures to come throughout the build.

SnailD posted some dyno sheets with a speed3 making around 400 at 23psi. Anything close to 400 and I will be happy.

Nice! I recently as in a couple months ago was fully bolted on 5 gal of E spraying meth from 17lbs plus on a BNRS3 and was making 390... I wasn't impressed. So what you read in my signature is the results of the last 3 months going back to drawing bored and starting new. I thought the same thing thinking that would be enough but I was not satisfied.

I chose not to go with the BNR S3 due to it being maxed out around 380 or so running e85 and meth. This way with the S4 if I'm not happy I can build the block and go crazy.

Which FMIC you planning to run, and are you considering clocking for under-routed piping?

I'm leaning towards the JBR piping kit with a TR8 core. If I can find a good deal I will go with the under-routed setup. I'm a poor State employee so I have to find the best deals I can.

Keep in mind the one Snail tuned is at altitude in Colorado, that set up would be making much more power if it could actually breath. I'm excited to see what you get out of this set up!

Very nice setup.

I am currently tuning a car with an S4 here now.

Haven't turned up the boost yet, but it looks promising.

Have you noticed any sort of boost creep like some of the larger GT30 sized turbos with IWG?

I was attempting to avoid a smokey K04, even though they are kind of hit or miss with which ones have problems.

I can now confirm that the BNRS4 holds perfect 16 PSI flat-line spring pressure.

Boost control is super smooth and easy to manage.

So I'm still waiting on the turbo to arrive, but I was able to pick up a few parts in the meantime.

Thanks to the MSF for sale section, I was able to grab a TR8 Core with a CXRacing piping kit and a JBR 3.5 intake. Piping kit wasn't my first choice, but after doing a little research it should be fine. Will try to grab some more pics of the car this weekend cleaned up and outside of my garage.

@Ziggyboy; how long do you have to wait to get the BNR S4 turbo? I'm thinking of ordering one or rebuilding my S3. Not sure if upgrading S3 to S4 would make a huge difference.

you don't really need a small battery box/51R battery tray. both the ECU and the 51R Battery will fit inside of the stock battery box.

Mine should be here on Friday. BNR is getting caught up on orders so hopefully some of our vendors will be keeping them in stock. I think you will be able to get more out of the S4 without having to push it near as hard.

Yeah, I have been looking at a few threads with info on making everything fit. Waiting on getting everything mocked up before I make the decision on what I want to do.

i can take a picture of mine if you want. it's more easier than you think. you make a small cut just so the ECU cables can fit and that's it. the battery and ecu would be covered unlike using battery tray and saves you over $100+

The only issue I could see, is if the battery fails or shorts and leaks, pops, etc.

I bought JBRs battery tray off here and I do hate how the ecu isn't covered. Of course I haven't installed it yet but I'm gunna try and make a custom cover to cover both the battery and ECU

Go with the battery in the trunk. Makes working in the engine bay so much easier all the time.

Over the weekend I began tearing out the parts that are going to be replaced. Everything took about 4 hours including a trip to Harbor Freight to pick up an oxygen sensor socket. A bunch of parts should be rolling in this week so I can start putting things back together.

I was able to extend the coolant hose that can cause some issues with larger intakes. This may seem like common sense to most, but there are some that may need a little more info on how its done. Total cost was $7.00 and any local parts store should have everything.

Gates 5/8" Hose Connector- Part #28604
3" of 5/8" Heater Hose
HoseClamps

Find the coolant line that runs directly beneath the EGR valve and connects to the firewall behind the turbo.

Use something to clamp the line to prevent a large loss of engine coolant. I used a pair of channel-locks and a rag to soak up the fluid that came out. Find something to plug the line you pull the hose off, so you don't loose a bunch of fluid from that as well.

Assemble 3" of hose and the 5/8" Gates connector. Place this between the hose and metal line, then tighten everything back up.

Does your intake push on the battery box and are you still on the stock turbo? Maybe the S3 shifts the intake over more than the ko4 does. I like how you did your box. I thought about positioning the ECU like that, but decided not to to avoid adding any stress to the wires.

@Ziggyboy; I would recommend some additional improvements to your motor mounts. At least a corksport insert for the TMM. I poly filled my stock PMM and it isn't too loud, but definitely helps (and was cheap). If your car is down for a bit it would be a good time to try it. Also, I think I found you on KSL. Since I don't live near any other speeds you are one of the most "local" to me.

Since I don't live near any other speeds you are one of the most "local" to me.
I'm definitely going to purchase mounts, just need to decide on what brand. Yeah thats me on KSL, trying to raise some funds to keep this build going.

Intake is some space to the battery box. And There's no stress on the ECU
Since that's how stock was but a bit closer.

As for mount. No reason to not go with Diamond Motorsports Trio. RMM/TMM/PMM.

Will keep the engine rock solid and with minimal NVH.

If you want race car vibes go with JBR.

If you want less vibes with the same mounted benefit, Damond seems to be the way to go.

I will be going with Damond but haven't decided if I should also replace my Cobb RMM.
