2012 MS3 brake light bulb

So I was trying to replace one of my brake light's bulb and not sure if you have to remove the assembly in order to remove it. Usually you just turn and pull, and it should come off. But earlier, I tried twisting it and it just wont come off. I didn't want to twist it hard and end up breaking the socket. I posted the picture below, the one with the harness off is the brake light. Also, what the hell is that yellow thing ( the sponge-looking thing)?

Also, the manual says:

Due to the complexity and difficulty ofthe procedure, the LED bulbs should bereplaced by an Authorized Mazda Dealer. LED bulb replacement is not possible. Therear combination component must be replaced.

Looks like this bulb is built-in

If you have the tech package with LED tails then the brake light isn't serviceable. The turn signals can be replaced.
Is it common for the red LEDs to fail? I know they sell aftermarket replacements.

Didn't fail, I was going to replace it with something 'brighter'.
