Default EGR Issue

I have a 2013 Mazdaspeed 3 that I have had since new. It has been throwing a code for insufficient recirculation (P0401 I think). The dealer ran a diagnostic that confirmed it was the EGR valve. So instead of paying the $930 the dealer wanted, I bought a new valve directly from Japan for $150 and installed it. The old one was in fact filled with crud and I cleaned out the mating surface with some Qtips.

Now it is still throwing the same code...Damn it!

Any ideas?
