tl;dr Want gauages, want to run AP at same time, are dual aeroforces necessary then?


So I've been researching some gauges recently and saw a set up that @deadlandxtreme had that I really liked, but my research yielded some questions.

I like the SRTI boost gauge, might go Defi instead, doesn't seem to matter as they are both solid, but the price is what gets me. Likewise with the aeroforces. I'm going to do the 3-gauge a-pillar pod in my gen2 was leaning towards dual aeroforce + boost gauge. The aeroforces tap into the obd2 though, so you can't run the AP at the same time? And doesn't the AP log all that shit anyway. So the dual aeroforce set up + all the sensors is going to run me like $700 that is just wasteful spending, right?

I was leaning towards some glowshift gauages since they seem consistent and reliable if nothing else and that'd be the cheapest way to go, and the gauges come with the sensors, and I can run the AP full time still. Possible still a Defi or STRI boost gauge.

Am I on the right track? Any thing I'm missing here when it comes to installing/running gauges properly?

What are you monitoring other than boost? You are correct you can only run 1 OBD device at a time.

You can run the aeroforce and ap at the same time using an obd-ii splitter. They draw info from different pins. I am actualy waiting on my defrost vent pod to arrive tomorrow to do the install this weekend. Honestly im adding a switch to the power of the af gauge just to make sure it doesn't interfere with logging and flashing maps. Btw @rfinkle2 is running the same setup. Im also installing a glowshift boost gauge.

NO, theres a video of the mazda 3 crash test and the pillars pop out toward the windshield instead of your face. it's on here look for it

This sounds like complete overkill to me. Your AP can monitor and log pretty much everything. Watching multiple parameters is nice but for the $700 I'd spend that elsewhere.

Do you guys even watch those pods when driving? When I track my car I just look ahead, if I had to peek from time to time at gauges I would be slow as shit.

You're safe with the pod. But I will say, 3 is overkill for sure. It's nice to be able to see everything at a glance. Not needed really , but if you have the means at the time of the want, go for it.
An AP would get the job done if you were budget minded. I just wanted to be able to see exact boost and fuel pressure. The fact that I can see my BATs and Knock warning is a plus.

I run dual aeroforces and monitor KR, FP, Boost, and AFR.
Only ever hook up my AP to flash a map, which gets less frequent the closer you get to being dialed in.

i have had an ultra gauge for a bout a year now. you can monitor 6 parameters at once so i have my home screen set to:
Engine Temp - IAT - STFT - LTFT - cat bank 1 temp - Timing advance. Its a sick little device, however it too uses the OBD so you cant run that with your AP.

my question is do you actually have an ultra gauge and are monitoring fuel pressure because mine only has an option for diesel fuel pressure, which reads like 1200 at WOT which i know is no where near right haha (before someone asks the stupid question, mods in sig).

I'd like a more accurate/easier to read boost gauge, and I wouldn't mind knowing Oil temp/pressure, voltage (in case I do any stereo upgrades), or AFR.

The plan being the AP, which will only show me one or two things at a time, can stay on and show me one or two other things/do data logs/flash new tunes.

Didn't know about this...is pretty cheap...wouldn't mind one if it was accurate/didn't fall off the windshield everytime I hit a bump.


Just looking for easy ways to keep an eye on the important stuff once I start tuning, just trying to get everything in place before tuning so I'm not behind the 8-ball on monitoring. And it'd be nice to not have to log/upload logs every so often just to see if my FP or AFR's were off.

Monitoring with an ap is no good for me. I have the aerforce for live monitoring and it's great. I also have three gauges in my center dash.

Yeah it stays in the windshield, yes its under d rail pres, mine goes up to 1900 psi.

Is it a reliable boost gauage? Ever compared the ultragauge readings to the AP?

I'm taking a step back and thinking buying one of these guys is waaay easier/cheaper. I suppose if the boost gauge on it isn't great I can always do a single boost gauge/pod at that point.

$700!? Niggah you crazy. It's like $3XX Iirc Tom.

I love it cuz I love to monitor ltfts when I'm cruising around town. It's a great heads up if something is acting up. And genpu does not have the dash hawk option.

Yeah better than my prosport elec boost gauge, that thing is always on the higher side and doesn't zero out.

Sorry, last question...have you tried running this with an OBDII splitter cable so you can keep this and the AP hooked up at the same time? Someone above said you could with the aeroforce but I'm assuming there are differences among different products.

I found one on Amazon and am hoping it will work. Ideally, if the UG and the AP can run at the same time...I'm done.

Worst case scenario is I keep the UG hooked up all the time and only use the AP for logging/flashing...keep the cheaper piece in the car so if it's stolen I'm not out big $$

Here it is. Jump to about 1:15 to see exactly what the panel on the pillar does upon impact. It basically pops off and swivels toward the windshield. If you've ever taken that panel off, then you probably noticed that it's attached to the pillar itself via a strap at the top. This keeps it from becoming a projectile.

I know finkle was running this set up and he assured me on his 2010 ms3 (same as mine) he was able to use both at the same time. He hadn't tried flashing or logging thou. Ive got my guage in today and according to ups should have my obdii splitter tomorrow along with my pod. This weekend I will install everything and report back. I'll also be installing a 12v switch to turn power on and off to the AF just to make sure it does not mess with the ap when Im logging.

I guess $700 means dual aeroforce, boost gauge and extra aeroforce shit, like oil or egt or something, cuz dual aeroforce is $400. And IF u really can run it and the AP at the same time, with the egt and oil pressure additions, that would fucking rock! I was about to sell mine because I hated hooking and unhooking it for the ap. but if I can install a switch and just turn it off to log, than I am really happy w it.

The splitter will work with the AP and at least one Aeroforce gauge, and I would assume that it would work with the dual set-up as well. The Aerforce dual set up links the 2 together as 1 gauge, so I believe it will function the same as with 1 gauge.

The guages are cool because you can set alerts for them as well in the case that a certain pid reaches a threshold of your choice.

I agree it isn't necessary to have a million gauges, but it is nice to have the Aeroforce gauges if you want to set a few warnings / monitor simultaneously.

As far as the airbags go, Skeurton posted the vid that makes me comfortable saying that although bruises are inevitable if your side airbags deploy, I don't think there will be any significant injury due to gauges being mounted there.

Do you have the Classic or EM? Not sure when the EM came out but it monitors a lot more, I'm hoping FP in regular gasoline cars is something added to the EM and that FP can be monitored accurately. If not I'll the use the AP to.

That said, have you tried use the UG with an OBDII splitter? I'd like to run the AP and UG together If I could.

the $75 one, not sure which it was, i didnt even know there was two so if the new one has come out within the past year or so i have the old one. Apparently its fail on my part though because it says diesel but as someone pointed out to me its still accurate. I have not used an OBD splitter because i monitor boost on a separate gauge and have all my other information on my ultra gauge. The only thing i'm not currently able to view that i would like is AFR but really i just check that every couple of weeks to make sure everything is running right.

The new EM version can read boost and AFR. If you have the old one, you can send it in to them and get it flashed to the newer version for $10.

That's the one I just ordered...along with an AP. Hoping mounting them on either side of me and finding a way to run them at the same time will tell me all I need to know.

Alright guys, I got my splitter today and it will not work w the ap. I tried both 1 and 2 gauges but my ap can not communicate to monitor anything. I do not have a separate power wire for the aeroforce if that matters. I just have it plugged straight into the obdll

Well that sucks because I plan on doing the same thing, but I havent bought the splitter yet. Which splitter did you use? I know the dashhawk and ap work on a splitter with no issues.

In the back of the af there is a tiny fuse, pull it out and it will not draw power through the obdii port. Try it like that. What year do you have?

Hey boss. Since your dreams of using the OBD splitter doesn't work, willing to sell your guage to me? I'm finally ready to buy an aeroforce. I was so close to hit "check out" at the aerofoce website.

Does this mean it won't work with the UltraGauge/AP combo as well? I'm tempted to try anyway but wasting $25 on a cable I can't use would be annoying.
