Default Experiences with cut.

Here's my experience so far with recent events. (TL-DR, look under the squiggly lines)
  • back in March, installed upgraded turbo and supporting mods. (on top of pre-supporting mods)
  • Started tuning process with Stratified.
  • Extremely happy with results, very rarely got fuel cut, unless on a particularly cold night in a cold part of tampa.
  • Clutch starts slipping due to lots of added torque. Laying off car a bit.
  • mod bug starts itching. weather gets hot. knock starts showing up everywhere because BATs are at 150 after stopping at lights more than twice. try e85, great results to combat knock.
  • works so well, i get the urge to zoom zoom around again. clutch stops slipping so much, i figure because hot weather + zoom zoom = not as much torque.
  • At some point, i messed with my MBC and start getting boost cut. I tried dialing it down to no avail. So i just put it back to where i thought i had it. (pretty much dead-on 20PSI at "florida-regular" ambient temps-- 85 degrees) Deleted mufflers to have straight pipe. made things worse as now i had zero backpressure and was backfiring with boost cuts. Tried lowering boost more, still didn't help. Put mufflers back on and added 3-BAR MAP sensor.
  • Altered tune to support new MAP and to up the boost cut limit to 25PSI. Set Guardian Angel to around 23-24ish. Punched MBC back up to around 20-21. Started getting cut again, which was weird to me because the boost wouldnt even go up to 21.
  • Checked things over and saw that my load was maxing at 2.59. Checked tune, and sure enough that was my limit.
Been doing a little research on surpassing my load limits, what they really mean and whether or not I should bother trying to pass them. Still not clear on any of it other than it has to do with fueling (upgraded HPFP internals still hold 1750-1900 fine)

I think I'd be ok going up from 2.60 load to 2.70, killing it at 7000rpms. I also think that it's just a tiny bit over 2.60 is where I'm getting the cut.

I'd like to see if anyone else has an idea on this. or to help explain to me the detrimental side effects of upping the load another .1

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Was hitting boost cut, upgraded MAP, now I'm getting load cut. Eventual goal = 22PSI with no cutting at all. only really want 350-360 AWHP.
Need to know if it's OK upping my load cut threshold from 2.6 to 2.7, and what the side effects of doing so would be. (as far as fueling issues or stresses on certain components. I know all eventually leads to boom, but i'd like a little explanation on what parts are stressed.)

THANKS!

At home, i'll upload them tonight. But everything looks good, just tipping into load cut at 2.59 (cut set at 2.6)

My AP is old, so it logs slower, but you can still see it. fuel, BATs, trims, everything shows OK. Just the load max is being reached so it kicks the car back with fuel cut.

or, what would cause load to go up when basically nothing really changed on the car, with the exception of a little higher ambient heat and some E85 in the tank?

if you tuned for e85 using a maf cal that could do it, also if you have a boost cut and the guardian angel, just set your max loads to unattainable limits, bingo bango done

No tune for e85, just a couple gallons mixed in to reduce knock at high temps. LTFTs are around 0.12% at higher throttle input, about 6% (negative i think?) at idle. So it's really close and im not worrying about it. Knock prevention is awesome.

so nothing to worry about with ... for example 2.8 or 3.X level loads?

I do have the GA and boost cut will be set to 25. I really dont want to go too high on torque, since that's what really kills the motors (or so i've been told )

raise your load cut limits above the max you see by .2. boost cut is more important then load cut anyway but you still want both of them somewhat close to what you actually see.

P.S. why diddent u just go back to @Lex for help?

Because i didn't want to bug him. He's a busy guy.
If I bugged him for every dumb question I had, he'd probably ignore me. I thought I'll save it for the real important ones.

Figured someone would be bored at work and have an answer

im sure he would have been more then willing to help you. he does have his own vendor section now which you could make a thread and ask him for some quick map changes because of the problems you were experiencing. its not like you were asking for a retune, just some advice on how to get rid of your cut.

Contact me anytime with tuning issues as Anthony mentioned. Post up in my section or drop me an e-mail with a log. Adjusting load cuts is very easy.

OK, so then can a mod move this thread into ST's subforum? I'll attach log(s) tonight.

I've already altered the map to go up to 2.70. I'll change it so it goes up to 2.80 when i get some time. I just wanted to know if it was ok to do so, and it looks like it is so I am good.

We'll see how the car likes it.

Here's the best way to do this. Please email me with the map you are running now and a log with said map. Tell me which Stratified map yu started from and what changes you made. I will look at all this and if it just needs a load cut bump I will get that done right away.

If you have other goals in mind or changes just write me and let me know and we will discuss these to see how to best achieve them.

I'm figuring a major thing I need to do is change out spark plugs. I have about 40k on these Denso ITV22s.

What do you guys think? Go with the NGKs? or ITV22s again OR try the ITV24s for two-step? I don't think i'm making enough horsepower for it, but I want to see what you guys think before I put an order in for it.

A 2 step colder plug is not needed and I would go with the NGKs. I've run these without issues for many miles and the Densos have had some failures recently.

Going on my hunch about the spark blowout... Ordered new NGK plugs and started installing.

quickly took a look at old Denso ITV22s, show nice signs of wear in my opinion, even if a little hot.
4-3-2-1

Well... gaps on the old plugs were all fairly even... but they were at ~.033 each... wow, lots of erosion after a few years and 40k miles. Very possible that this explains my dips of power. No wonder it was so spotty, has to be spark blowout :\

Regapped the new NGK plugs to ~.027

Installed everything back up and fired car up, it's happy so far. Haven't gone test driving yet. Haven't eaten today. going to do that soon and post back results.

--EDIT---

OK, tested over a 40 mile drive. Other than the extreme heat today causing my BATs to be stuck around 120 (and was unable to get E85 ) and giving me points of knock here and there, the "cutting" feeling is completely gone. Smooth pull in 5th gear from 70-120 MPH. That used to mean positively getting cut, now it's gone. awesometimes.

Waiting until tonight when the temps go down to try it out some more. maybe if i get some E later in the week, i'll be able to do some longer and harder pulls with logs. Too nervous to install meth just yet, even though my kit is due to arrive on Monday.

Those plugs are definitely gapped too wide and worn out. Good choice on new plugs.

funny thing was, i remember tapping them down to .028 as recommended. They just wore that way over time. Much better at .027ish.

Once I get the nerve to install the meth, i'l let you know for a retune, @Lex. Thanks

As plugs heat cycle the strap tends to stretch out over time so when you start misfiring it's one of the first things to check.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think of the condition of the plugs? they look almost identical in real life as those photos, just a little more of a pinkish/tan hue.

if they are indeed a little "hot" looking, what can I do to combat it? 2-step colder is overkill, but anything else I can do?

What makes you think they are hot looking? For heat you look at the strap and see where the blue marks are. From just the pics they don't look too hot.

The ashy appearance. I was trying to reference it to the photo guides on other websites.

If you think they're OK, then cool.

Been turning up my boost after i had to drop it to around 16psi. around 21.5ish now. absolutely no pulling back or any other bad feelings of before.

Only thing i'm seeing is a little more knock (friggen heat) and my AFRs going lower than i've ever seen them before. Usually they're around tens at the lowest, but now i've seen mid nines. I'm sure this really isn't an issue. Just wanted to bring it up and see if you had a comment. Otherwise, i'll just consider it OK.

When BATs climb over 130 the ECU will richen AFRs further than commanded. But I can't say anything without at least seeing a log.

Glad the hesitation is gone though.
