Default More intake and turbo discussion!

Just wrote another article - this time with more detail - regarding the effects of intakes and pressure drops for turbochargers. It's an easy read - have a look and discuss!

dam good blog, lots of information. on a bnr stg 3 would there be a big gain in power with a 3 inch intake over stock size?. i see most people run the stock size intake on this turbo, i was planing on keeping my sure aeros and buying a jbr tip when i go bnr stg3 but now im leaning more towards getting a 3 inch intake, more power and safer for the turbo itll be worth the extra money..

Love seeing this stuff compiled in your articles...

MSF has so much info, but it's not always easy to draw a conclusion even after forum crawling a dozen threads.

Yes absolutely. A lot of the OEM sized intakes are maxed out and can cause MAF related fuel cut when you really push the BNR. A 3"+ intake on a big turbo is a almost a must.

@Lex what 3 inch intake would you recommend? ill more than likely grab a jbr 3" intake because he use a k&n filter, high quality filter better flow. i would assume it would flow better than a sure intake, i love my sure sri, i bought it way back when sure was still part of this forum but the filter on it looks kinda cheap well compared to a k&n filter.

I'm no Lex, but on 3" I personally like the metal intakes like the HTP because you can just switch couplers if you go big turbo, instead of getting a whole new intake.

That's a good point it's a pain having to replace the intake for every turbo upgrade.. I'm gonna have to look in to metal intakes I like silicone but in the long run a metal intake will save me some money if I go bigger.

The SURE filters were super restrictive. I did testing with them and you can definitely gain from just swapping filters.

i kinda figured it was a restrictive intake, kinda a weird the silicone and maf housing are made of good quality and looks good but the filter looks like its a $5 filter. what brand of filter did you use when you did the test, if you dont mind me asking?? i might swap my filter for a aem dry flow i got laying around maybe ill be able to get past 12 psi from 5000rpm- redline..

I've been using the AEM dryflows for a while now with great results. The flow similarly to a K&N without the oil or mess.

I think you need this one instead of Bernoulli's Eq, Darcy?Weisbach equation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Isn't the flow in the intake turbulent?

Yes it is turbulent. The head loss can be approximated by this equation plus head loss due to junctions in the intake piping.

Bernoulli states there is conservation of energy meaning that any time you increase velocity you drop pressure and velocity increase is proportional to the diameter of the tubing. Due to the flow being turbulent friction, and thus the material of the tubing do play a role in pressure loss.
