Default Stratified Meth kit install using stock washer reservoir

**************************************
UPDATED JAN 21 2013
**************************************

Decided to update and revamp this post with some fairly thorough diagrams for both Gen1 and Gen2. I have also included a good method to mount the nozzle in the charge piping without tapping a hard pipe. I will leave the original post content and images below but all you need are the 2 diagrams and information below. I have also added this writeup to our Blog

The octane and cooling benefits of installing a WMI kit on the MazdaSpeed and other vehicles is well documented. However one of the toughest parts of the installation is installing the fluid tank in a tight engine bay. The vehicles however come with a perfectly good and methanol safe tank for windshield washer fluid (washer fluid contains methanol). On top of this they have a low level light – a huge bonus.

While tapping the stock tank is an option, there is another option for using this tank without tapping it – drawing through the OEM washer pump.

The 2007-09 and 2010-13 vehicles have a different setup for this so we have created 2 diagrams attached below to show the two different setups. In both cases the windshield washers will continue working. However for the Gen2 (2010-13) cars the more complicated setup means that when activating the front washer, fluid will also be sent to the back and vice-versa. This can be a nuisance and if you don’t need the rear washer you can always just cap the line going to the rear washer.

Now you no longer have to run lines inside the car or add another tank and can enjoy the benefits of WMI if these were holding you back!

************************************************** *****

Well, as I found out, we get really shitty gas here on the west coast. 94 octane knocks like a bitch in 4th gear and up and I got fed up with it.

So I decided install meth/water injection to keep the motor clean, knock at bay, and BATs happy with a top mount.

I wanted to keep it all in the engine bay and modify as little as possible. No need to add a tank in the trunk or run lines from a pump in the tank.

As you will see in the pictures below, the install included the following:

1. Tapped stock cold pipe and a Devil's own D05 nozzle, tight 90 degree turn, and check valve. The DO 90 degree turn makes all the difference here because you don't want to be hitting the hood with a tall nozzle such as the one from snow performance.

2. The pump was mounted where the horn is. A longer bolt is used to hold the pump in place with the horn behind it. Twin zap straps fit perfectly through the frame rail openings and the seemingly useless little bracket behind the driver side bumper offers another support. Make sure you pad your pump properly if it touches anything as it will vibrate and make noise.

3. The meth source. I used the stock windshield reservoir. At first I was going to tap it, but I quickly realized that water comes out if you unplug the stock washer pump. So I used a T to draw meth right through the pump. Everything works great and no tapping needed! I ran the hose in front of the bumper and covered it in wire loom to keep the color black.

4. The electronics. I got a sweet deal on a used Snow performance stage 2 kit. So I had a controller with a built in map sensor. I mounted it on the driver strut tower ... might move this but for now it does the trick. Power comes from an accessory fuse where an add-a-fuse was added. Make sure the source turns on with key on and off when key is off.

5. Finally for the boost source used a T from the BOV.

Make sure all connections are sound, no chance for electrical shorts, and use zap straps to brace loose hoses and wires.

After fiddling with the onset and full flow settings, I must say I love WI. Knock is down by at least 2 degrees and BATs fall to even below ambient! Heatsoak is much less of an issue and power is always there. Now I need a fuel pump as I am always running in "cold weather"

That's a nice set up. I was thinking of putting the pump on the other side because i thought it is supposed to be closer to the reservoir. Also, with my FMIC, I had to relocate the ambient temp sensor where your pump is now. I am sure I could find some other place for it, tho.

The other side has the reservoir in the way so it was more difficult to locate there. I am sure there are many ways to go about it, but I found this setup to work well for me and stay compact.

I like that setup a lot very similar to what I had in mind. Good work.

This may be a DUMB question and I just don't know any better ... but using the stock windshield washer res. for the meth is a good idea but I'm assuming you don't want to wash your windows with it. What do you do in that case?

Why not? It's a good cleaner. I don't use 100% meth.

It's not hard on things like the rubber/seals ... or the windshield washer fluid pump? I'm sure it's not rated for meth.

Of course it is. A lot of washer fluids contain methanol. There is a list on this forum that is a sticky that tells you what brands contain what meth percentage.

Lex,

Did you have an issue with the nozzle (90* part) hitting the inside of the hood?

I installed mine as deep as it'll go and it seems to be tearing up the rubber stuck to the inside of the plastic hood piece.

LEX,

You think 94 octane is shit try 91 piss gas in Cali.

I like this idea and wondered how the setup has been for you?

How long before you need to refill your reservoir?

Are you running increased boost and if so what PSI at WOT?

Why not tap the pipe on the side instead of the top. Then you don't have to worry about the 90 degree piece or hitting the hood. Mine is tapped on the back side of the pipe. I'm using it as the extra boost source for my Synapse BPV atm but will be using it for meth in the near future.

The 91 octane in Washington is actually better than the 94 we get here. Go figure.

The setup worked great while I had the top mount. Now with an FMIC I moved the nozzle to the silicone tube going to the throttle body. Works just as well and cools the intake charge to ambient temps. I have a D03 nozzle now.

I am running 18-19psi on the K04 depending on ambient temps. No reason to push that little thing any further. Reservoir lasts quite a while - especially since I have a Canadian MS3 that has a bigger windshield washer reservoir. It also has the advantage of having a low level light so I never have to guess about the level and just fill up when I see the light.

I would run this setup but am concerned about accidentally spraying methanol (no mix) all over my windshield/paint.....

I was wondering if the MS3 had a mod like this. How much bigger is it?

Lol, yes flashback! Surprised more people aren't using the stock tank. It works on gen1 and gen2 but the gen2 pump system is different so you have to add a check valve and be a little sneaky. I should do a writeup and update this.

I've been running the same meth setup as Lex for the past two years and I haven't had any problems yet. It's great when I see the low washer fluid light come on and I still have enough fluid to last me to the gas station to do a quick refill.

I will put something together soon but not for another week or 2 as I'm traveling and swamped this week.

Essentially you pull through the OEM washer pump (the lowest one) for Gen1 and for Gen2 it's a bit more involved but the same principles apply.

3. The meth source. I used the stock windshield reservoir. At first I was going to tap it, but I quickly realized that water comes out if you unplug the stock washer pump. So I used a T to draw meth right through the pump. Everything works great and no tapping needed! I ran the hose in front of the bumper and covered it in wire loom to keep the color black.

lex / or anyone .... Can this method be used on the 6?
Looking to install soon and don't want any drama's

Looks like there are two washer tank sizes on the MS3.... anyone know what the actual tank capacities are for these?

That's awesome that the washer tank is bigger in the Canadian MS3 ... This is how I'll do it if I ever do WMI.

Did you buy your MS3 new as a canadian unit? If so you should empty the tank for me and measure how much it takes to fill it back up.

I can try to measure mine when I get home later today.

Yes it works on all speeds. The gen 2 requires an extra check valve. I will get some diagrams up hopefully within a week just have been too busy.

I would definitely be interested in a write up for 2nd gen because I was going to start to piece together a kit and just bought a 2.5 gallon reservoir and I am thinking I might have went overboard lol.

Yup you can do that on any vehicle. It makes install a breeze. Because half the battle is finding a place to install a seperate tank.

I thought knowing was half the battle?

I know I can fill my washer tank with nearly all of a gallon of washer fluid when its near empty. Anyone else care to comment or grab actual numbers?

I believe its a gallon tank.

For reference I only use a custom reservoir I made that is 1.5qts. It last me a couple weeks of spirited driving and that is with a d10 nozzle. (Or one nator rd rage excursion) I don't have meth kick on until 11psi or so. So the washer reservoir should last quite a while. Only reason I wasn't sure if I wanted to run 100% meth. I probably wouldn't run more than 50/50 through the washer tank.
