I usually do it pretty damn tight with a vice grip. It comes extremely tight from the factory, I wouldn't risk doing it with an open wrench because you can't really reach all the way. A deep socket is literally $5 at a hardware store. Cheaper in advance. I would invest in it.

One of the most useful tool sets I've invested in is a set of metric deep sockets. They go a long way in our car's installations.

Quoted for truth. I use deep sockets all the time.

Do we just lube the shaft and the oring? By lubing we mean putting on a glove and using a finger to wipe it on there or dip it oil? Sorry for noob questions.

I would lube that and the spring just in case. You can dip it in a small container with oil, or just apply it with your glove. Just make sure all surfaces are covered.

Great writeup! Used this to install my autotechs today. Only issue i had was the metal fuel line stuck up a tad too high when i tried to reinstall the pump. Easy fix with a rubber mallet, 12" extension and some love taps.

I apologize if this is an idiotic question but
A) Is it OK to leave the internals in the box they shipped in until a month or 2 from now or should I open them up and oil them to prevent any possible corrosion ?
B) What type of oil should be used (if the above is applicable and) during the installation? Full synthetic/conventional?

thanks guys!!!

You can leave them in the box, just make sure you have all the parts. A friend of mine was missing a small stopper (the 2 smallest pieces) and did not realize it until all the parts were taken off the car. Some people also store them in a zip-lock bag filled with oil until install day. This helps lubricating them. You can use any oil. I just used some leftover Penzoil Platinum from when I change my oil.

I kept mine in zip locs filled with oil for a couple weeks right up until installing them, and they work great.

Push down on the spring and get the metal retainer on top of the piston to get it out of the way

does the retainer clip just pull straight up? or do you have to turn it?

Have you tried pushing down from the bottom of the piston as shown below? I haven't done internals in a while, but from what I recall I had to push the spring down a bit, although this may have been required with the aftermarket retainer.

ok so i'm thinking the retainer clip can be slid off if the spring is compressed enough? or no? anyone else remember?

Yes. Just take it out, you're not hurting anything

Sounds like its stuck on the 18mm nut? Maybe spray some brake klean or give the spring a gentle twist to get it loose. The spring is just wrapped around the nut. Same on the other side of the spring on the retainer clip side. Its just pressure or maybe some gunk in there.

You should be able to slide out the whole piston if the spring is stuck on the nut. Then I just twisted the spring off of the 18mm nut. Thats what happened on mine.

ok i can spin the retaining clip freely with the spring compressed...but i don't know how to pull it off? do i pull straight up on the retaining clip, or do i need to use a screw driver in the gap of the retaining clip to pop it off?

Push the piston from the bottom as pictured in the image I linked above

Dont use a screwdriver!!! Leave the retaining clip on the piston. The piston slides up and down on the cylinder so you should be able to push it up with your finger in the hole (as mentioned by @adlpb ) or pull it from the top by holding the retaining clip. Sounds like the spring is stuck on the nut so just get the piston out first. Maybe lube the piston so it slides out easier. Then take off the spring once the piston is out.

literally can't push the piston up at all...i can push it down with the spring fairly easily though. would it hurt anything to hit the bottom part of the piston off of something to get it out of the 18mm assembly? or is there something i'm misssing?

Dude its like banging your gf. Dick either goes in or out, haha. Take a Look at your new set of internals and how the piston slides up and down on the cylinder. Try some lube. Do not hit it with any thing in case you fuck up the install and need to put the stock one back in.

maybe get some Nator help with the rest of the install because this is the easy part. Call my cell phone (check your PM reply) if you want me to talk you through it.

Here's a pic of the stock internals:

so i got the internals in and everything seems to be working great so far. fuel pressure was 1600+ on the cold start!

i had to actually tap the piston out from the underside with a screwdriver and hammer and cloth inbetween the piston and screwdriver. it physically would NOT pull off any other way...there was a decent amount of gunk in there as well.

yeah i cleaned everything out as good as possible before putting it back in so in a few months i'll probably pull them again and check for build up/clean everything again if necessary. i've seen guys post pics where they're basically spotless and they were running e85 mixes and whatnot so who knows.

I discussed installation fails of Internals with Ryan Vieau from Autotech and he confirmed that the most likely time that the spring retainer can come loose is when the pump is being reinstalled. If the pump is jostled or bumped too much, the piston could slide forward just enough for the spring retainer to come loose or even fall off. This also depends on how tightly each end of the spring "grabs" the 18mm seal nut and the retainer on the opposite end. On my pump, the spring was tight on the seal nut but there was almost no grip on the retainer, which could allow the piston to slide.

If the piston does slide forward during reinstall, you probably wouldnt see it because it would already be inserted in the cam housing and be out of view.

Just some cautionary advice and feedback I received directly from Autotech.

The purpose of the vice is to hold the thing so you can break the 18mm nut loose. It takes a good amount of torque to do so. If you have an impact, the vice is not necessary.

So I ordered my internals today from Eric. I have a question though. My car had the SRI on it when I bought it and springs. I'm thinking it may have had more on it but was stocked out a bit to trade in. My question is, my fuel pressure is pretty high all the time anyway so is it possible to know if I already have internals without taking it all apart? I mean, I will make some logs but my fp seems high. On WOT runs it always stays in the 1600's though so maybe it is the stock parts. IDK

IDK
There really isn't a way of knowing without taking it apart. But the pumps do pretty good on the stock tune and usually start losing pressure when you up the boost.

Well, I am running stage 1 93+ sr right now. I am going to go ahead and slap it in there when it comes. I did 1 WOT pull in 4th and my psi never got above 1680 so I would say its stock.
