Damond Motorsports Mazdaspeed6 Drag Car

Hey y'all. Meet our MS6 drag car.

We have a couple goals with this car. This MS6 will be used for product development and testing, along with setting some records. We're after the fastest 1/4 mile time on the K04 first and foremost. Next year we plan on going full retard with it.

Last night was this car's first debut at the strip... Hell, basically the first time the car has driven for more than pulls, since we picked it up. Best run was a 12.9 at 102mph. This was among many issues, but thanks to @Farhan@DM; it's in the 12's. The car doesn't have much done to it ATM powerwise, just a big ol' intake, DP and tune. Suspension has been tweaked more than anything.

We've got a long road ahead of us, but after some passes we now have a baseline to improve upon. Few things to change out, and a bit to tweak.

Stay tuned to this thread for more details on the car and our path into the 11's. Also post up your MS6 drag set-ups, and what you think we should do to reach our goals with this car.

I've always been impressed with how little it takes to put these things in the 12s... look forward to seeing the K04 pushed. So are you going after the stock K04 record or the stock housing K04 record :) I'm still of the opinion that the k04 housing has a ton of potential and just needs some 'guts love'.

I was impressed by it, also. I wasn't sure it would crack 13 in the condition it was in, especially with the disappointing 60's.

100% stock OEM turbo.

I fucking love you guys, always taking an interest in the MS6's :) .

This is my 4th MS6, and Matt has previously owned 2. We're not near done with these cars.

tek_88 08-02-2017 10:07 AM

How'd you guys manage 12.9 @ 102 mph? Driver mod? Best I could do was 13.0 @ 108mph with a 2.01 60ft lol.

Made some more passes last night. Got her running right, and launching how I want. No more 1.7-1.8s 60's.

I really like these two slips from last night. They clearly showed me what I need to work on to get the next .1s off without adding any power or grip. The pass that launched slower and broke up at the end was a quicker pass. Can you tell why?

Lifted because it was breaking up a bit on top.

What he said!

Never had mine to the track. Afraid to launch hard anywhere with stock diff mounts.
Not sure how minimal mods can drop a full second off the advertised ET. The similar MPH to stock tells me most of that ET came from your 60'.

Had to lift on the 12.9@102 pass. A normal 12.9 pass is ~104-105.

The 60' is where I'm picking up time, and it's still on the stock tires. There's more work to do on the 330', and then find power.

You won't hurt anything launching hard with stock diff mounts except for the diff mounts themselves.

Oh. So when you said it only had a DP, you literally meant that's all it had. Sounds like the catback is missing. Lol.
I still have the stock catback and it's stupid quiet.

Not sure how many of you guys keep up on FB, but lots has happened since last post. Sorry I haven't kept up in here.

Sep 2, took her to FocusFest. Ran at Cordova, and won the fasted boosted car there with a 12.699. Track prep was horrible. Those poor fwd cars didn't have a chance, even though they had plenty of MPH on me.
Shitty part is that I roasted a valve doing it. Too much ignition delay on FFS, felt it let go between 3/4. Car was just tuned by me at the time, and I don't have the patience to tune properly. I was surprised that hadn't happened to me before, but now I know where the limit is.
Attachment 233726

Sep 9, car got a new (used) stock motor in it, got on the dyno at DynoSource at the northern edge of Illinois, and Justin@Freektune is on the phone. That dyno is really consistent, exactly what you want when tuning for power, but it's reading low.
Had a couple hiccups with the car because the motor just went in. Got it settled, went to the strip. First pass dropped a quarter second off the best E/T, 12.434@110.82.
Attachment 233728Attachment 233729

Sep 21, at GLD again, on 245 Nitto555. I've never launched on radials. I've never even launched with summer tires at a strip. First hit felt golden, 1.616 60'. That pass would have been a 12.2 run if I hadn't screwed it up. Spent the rest of the night playing around with launch settings, tires, and technique. Made one more full pass, it was good enough for a new best ET despite a bad 60', 12.420 @ 110.13.
Attachment 233730

Still a lot to learn with these tires. Everything has to come together in these next few weeks, so we'll be going out as much as we can.

Nice work! I would love to see more vids of your passes. Are you on stock rear axles?

Driver side DSS axle.

From focusfest:

Quickest pass so far:

Quickest 60' so far:

Dat fiat and camaro reaction time! Solid passes for a little ko4. Keep up the excellent work!

It was a good night last night. First and second pass had the same ET, but nailed that 60' on the second. 12.240@110.96. 1.609 60'
We think that's the quickest K04 1/4 and 60.

Yatta 09-29-2017 10:48 AM

MS6 Unicorn or pure driver mod? wow...

qtrmile beast 09-29-2017 01:38 PM

Man after my own heart!!!!! my goal once i get back out there is some 1.5s (1.5-1.8) best to date is a 1.64. Something i have never liked is when we launch that ass end bangs really hard on the rear shocks. I think if we can get the rear tigher or progressive then we would get better 60s with less work...

Also what is your air pressure in your drags? well have fun with the stock turbo and its quick spool because when you get a larger frame turbo you are going to loose some of that snap from the stock turbo but you will feel better for your efforts at the other end...

The best turbo i have had as far as really quick spooling was the 7 blade 3076 that i had. Felt like it had a similar snap but much harder and more consistent..

Started at 40 and kept going down to 22 with similar results. The H&Rs are definitely holding me back right now. The suspension will be tested and dialed in the near future.

Even with a big turbo, I'll have plenty of power at launch. We're just getting started. Expect low 1.5 next year.

Im not doubting that!!! i am going to try and hunt down some 1.5 in november at the import vs. domestics with gt35r. i am definitely following to see what you guys do with your suspension. i was thinking about just getting some koni yellows in the rear to help out with the stiffness...

what PSI is the stock turbo pushing here to see the likes of lower 12's? Great videos by the way!

I'd venture to guess it tapers down to about 17-18 psi by redline.

qtrmile beast 10-03-2017 11:25 AM

Well i have did 13.2 with a 1.71 60 with about 19 psi. so with 1.6 or better 60s then it shouldnt be an issue to go 12s.. Also the big question is what it the weight of your car?

Apparently a 1.5 has already been done....

but notice no squat..

I wonder why this turbo seems to get a bad rep... i think its pretty good for what it is

That's just my guess based on the whp. If they're running a decent E mix with more timing, that power is achieved with less psi.

Yes. It smokes and has a history of needing a pre 100k rebuild often. Just a bad rep doesn't have to mean it's actually bad

I was recently shown proof of that pass. I had heard of it, but never saw it. Glad they did it, and real glad you found the video.

You should be able to do 12s with not much work at all. Was able to do that with my full weight road course car on a k04 and E with a half-ass tune.

We did turn the rear Konis to full stiff this last time. It might have helped, but nothing appreciable. They're no match for how bad the H&Rs are for this application.

@Fstrnyou; @Mazstor;
The psi this little K04 is holding varies pass to pass. That's largely because there was no intercooler on the car. I think I have managed to top out the stock 2.5 bar on a few occasions.

wait you were running 36 psi on a STOCK TURBO WITH NO INTERCOOLER??

It's 2.5bar absolute (Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure), so 1.5 bar gauge, ~ 22 psi boost. In reality it measured a bit over 23 before it would hit the ceiling.

Correct, no intercooler.

That's funny right there.

And with no intercooler, likely running a pretty strong E content.

Correct, no intercooler.

Did you run into fuel issues before adding corn?

yeah that sounds about right, when i get to the rebuild point i might try out a ko4 hybrid.

GroceryGtr 10-06-2017 06:14 AM

phate has also been playing around with no intercooler. No intercooler is fairly common for track setups. afterall you're going for all of 12 seconds and then stopping.

There was no "before adding corn" with this car. High temps, lots of boost, and 93 are a horrible idea. If you mean these boost levels with an intercooler, you'll have plenty of fuel with 93.

This is not a good idea even with E, but I was curious.

Without pulling out a log to confirm, I'd say 3-5 seconds before BATs are 170+, probably 8-9 seconds for 230+. This isn't a heat soak issue, this is an efficiency issue. She's running way off of peak efficiency.

Shottachris 10-11-2017 05:34 PM

Nice car

Finally put a TR6 size IC on it, didn't make more power but it's safer for the motor. Snapped an axle Sunday at our drag day, got it swapped and we were back out Tuesday.

Times are still dropping. It's really irritating working .02 seconds at a time, but we're getting there.

What rpm are you launching at? Launching at 4500 the best I could do was 2.0 on my 60.
