Good to know. I am going to buy one. One question though...are you running a BNR stage 3 or k04?

Running the BNR S3 now. Had horrible smoke with the K04 so I assumed it was the turbo after some diagnostics. Switched out and learned this warning. The BNR turbos are NOT a fix for the excessive turbo oil pressure problem.

Has there been any testing with this or the bnoon bolt about longevity concerns, as far as the bolt restricting too much? Just curious, but I guess with 130K on mine, if I can just get it to stop vaporizing two quarts of oil every 5,500 miles and give me another 10-15K out of it, that's good enough

Longevity is a good concern to address. I'm sure some people have been running the bnoon bolt longer than this one and I haven't heard any problems so far.

I don't have any issues at 20K but as soon as I see anything I will get this...or maybe now...hmmm.

Got it, install took about 1 hour. Shipoing was super fast ordered it Friday got here(ny) on Monday.
Snapped one of the bolts that hold the bpv. So I haven't gotten to test it much. Just picked up new bpv bolts ill update once car is running again.

Just curious - how did you make out with the bolt ?
I just replaced my motor and put in a catless DP and internals - now I'm smoking like Cheech and Chong, even with idle at 950 and Rotella....

You're going to have to get one and test it yourself. Some people (like myself) got rid of the smoking with the use of a properly sized restrictor bolt and some people didn't. It seems to be a case-by-case fix. It's a relatively inexpensive fix and if it doesn't work for you, you can turn around and sell it...

Yeah, I kinda figured it might be case by case. I made a bnoon bolt a few days ago but haven’t put it in yet. I guess I’ll have to suck up the cold weather and get it done.

Another thing worth checking is how high you guys are filling your car on the dipstick. I know that recently one of our members had an oil change done @ a dealership and not only did they put 5w-20 in the car, they overfilled it by a quart.

The turbo started smoking immediately.

Overfilling the oil can cause an increase in the pressure on the seals, AND worse things could happen down the road.

So, would a BNR need this too (cuz K04 hybrid, essentially)? I've read a lot about them, and haven't seen restrictors being used, but I want to be prepared for my upcoming install.

Bryan himself says "and no more smoke!" about the BNR, so I don't think it's an issue, but you guys know much more than me.

You would be fine man. The restrictor is great for older k04 turbos up there in miles.

I'm finished ruining your sales now Matt. LOL. Sorry man.

For the record, the restrictor bolts are very good for turbos with bad seals. I've seen the combo of bolt and Rotella work on quite a few cars.

Hahaha thanks Rob!

I've had a few customers with smokey BNR's purchase bolts.

Yeah, I heard about that recent dealer oil change disaster. I've seen that happen way too many times.

On a related note, my MS6's turbo is near death and burns oil like crazy. It especially doesn't help that I topped off the oil recently with 1/2 a quart too much. NCE though, it'll burn it back below the full mark lol.

I wonder if mine is doing the same thing.
I just switched motor, still using a rebuilt K04 from h.h.skinny that didn't smoke before I put on a catless DP (and new(ish) motor).
I switched to Rotella, put in my own bolt to Bnoon specs and raised idle to 950 then again to 1100.....still smokes like Cheech Marin.
The only thing that stops it is my weird idle issue that I have. If i'm stopped at a light etc and my car is in gear the idle bumps to about 1500 on it's own. As soon as I put it in neutral it drops to the preset 1100. If I let it idle up at 1500 in gear then I get CEL for "unexpected high idle" or something like that.....but....it doesn't smoke.
Of course, sitting at lights revving at 1500 rpm with the clutch pressed can't be a good thing.
My oil is below the top mark on the stick so I'm thinking my seals are going (they're only 6 months old) or IDKW is going on. Thinking of adding a Magnaflo universal cat to the DP to see what happens, just don't want to lose that turbo spool I just gained from removing the OEM DP. :-)

I made my own and put it in, still smokes like a MF. I've bought one and will try that as a last resort when it gets a bit warmer in CT. Other than that I have to put a cat on the DP to see if that does anything.

At some point if your seals as that toasted, you might just have to replace the turbo. Thats how my stock one was. Thicker oil, restrictor bolt and still smoked (granted I was catless)

Don't even go there. I just replaced the motor with a used genpu with 3500 miles on it.
Besides, I'm not "using oil" in any significant quantity. I just finished 3000 miles on the new motor and the oil moved one "x" down the dipstick. What's that, less than half a quart ?
I'm draining it this weekend so will measure it but it's not significant I'm sure.

@maisonvi; @Raider;
The turbo is a rebuilt K04 from hhsk1nny. I've run it for about 15-20K but only went catless when I put the replacement engine in - that's when the smoking started.
Assuming my old engine, which used a qt every 200 miles, was either fucked at the rings or the valve seals, would just replacing the engine with one that worked properly suddenly cause a failing turbo to manifest itself with smoke or would that just not happen and the addition of being catless was the main culprit ?

I know there are two trains of thought on this subject. One is that the stock catted DP creates enough back pressure to help the seals and the other is that the stock cats hide the smoke. Magnaflow sell a slip fit cat for $100 which I would cut into my DP if I thought it would make a difference, other than that I may as well go back to the stock catted DP….not really an option although I do still have it.

With the smoking, I've noticed that it doesn't always do it. Most of the time it starts after about 30 seconds but there have been a couple of times when I let it idle for 5 minutes and got no smoke. Weird.
