Default My Grizzly G0704 mill CNC conversion & build thread

In order to be able to prototype and manufacture more cool parts, I decided that getting a small cnc mill in my workshop was a must.

Budget was a small issue as I didn't want to lay out $10,000 + for something. I should have about 4-5k into all this setup.

I have been looking into doing the grizzly tool G0704 Mill Cnc conversion for a few years now, and have finally begun the adventure.

Here is a link to the manual G0704 Mill Shop our G0704 - Drill/Mill with Stand at Grizzly.com

A great resource for the cnc conversion & lots of other modifications

g0704.com

And a great source for parts to do a quick and easy conversion

http://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/

I have about 95% of everything needed to do the build. I also have about $700 in tool holding, mill vise, drill bits
, end mills & cutters.

The mill will be able to run 100% manually, or with a hand held control pendant as well as full cnc 3 axis. I may some day add on a 4th axis.

The mill will also have a full enclosure built for it so I can run flood coolant.

Also going to convert it to a belt drive and a bigger motor so I can run 7k-8k spindle rpm.

Machine specs for work area

Z axis (Spindle to table) 13"
Table travel X axis (longitudinal): 18-7/8"
Table travel y axis (cross): 6-7/8"
Table size: 7-1/16" x 26-5/8"

I will be doing some of the mods from Hoss CNC to allow about 18" of Z axis travel and almost 10 inches of y axis travel.

I have lots of stuff to show off but have not taken pictures of everything yet.

The mill in it's crate.

An old pc refurbished and ready to run

Building the control box for the cnc conversion

An aux connection box for the home / limit switches and a phono plug for a z axis height setting tool. This box will mount to the mill itself and allow a quick disconnect for moving the equipment.

Cnc conversion hardware kit with balls screws and stepper motor mounts.

Cleared out a space in the shop for it

Some cheap thin plastic panels on the wall to brighten up the area and make for less mess.

And now to begin the mill conversion soon.
