Ok guys, here's an update. Tried installing two different versions of a snap in Wiki. They are just completely fucked up in every way and do not play well with user permission, content layout, editor, etc.

So, while i fight to get my refund from that mistake, i went ahead and installed a REAL Wiki.

I present to you, the MSF MS3/6 Wiki:

So, you editiors need to create an account over there so we can get this started. I would also like to add James (Enki Fuck) as an admin since he is great with php and shit like that. We should be able to customize the shit out of this and make it the worlds best fuckin Wiki and set the example.

So, I guess a couple ways to do this. We organize something and put a framework on the wiki along the lines of what I highlighted and people can contribute to those pages.

We are gonna need some editors that can create pages and layout a basic framework. I saw that after I logged in that I can edit a page, but I can't create new pages. I'm guessing that's elevated permissions.

As a side note, fucking around in the wiki will get you a vacation on the forums proper.

I don't mind laying the groundwork, but I am a wiki n00b (only ever consumed), so I will have a learning curve to become familiar with the layout and making pages and stuff. It would be cool if someone here could do groundwork and has wiki editing experience.

I'd suggest you want to lay out an index of sorts with some structure like:

Tuning
- General
- - What is tuning
- - Terms
- How To's
- ATR
- - Boost
- - Timing
- - Fueling
- - etc
- Hypertech
- etc
Parts
- How To's
- Intakes
- - MAF Sensor
- Downpipes
- - O2 Sensor
- Fuel Pumps
- etc
Vehicle Specific
- MS3
- - GenWon
- - GenPu
- MS6
- Miata
- CX-7

and so on and so forth. I think having the basic structures and indexes is the best place to start before creating random pages. Then just go through and fill in the blanks once a high level structure is agreed on. If you just create random pages without any structure (the URL structure in wiki guides the layout to a big extent) it will be a total mess.

We need to start a thread or use this thread as a place for people to post links to info that should be added. It would be much easier to have a list of everything that should be added and then go from there.

It also might be helpful to allocate X section to a certain person, to avoid multiple people making changes at the same time and creating confusion/clean-up work.

Also, should we make a general engine, etc. theory section? Or are we keeping this 100% DISI related?

EDIT: I agree with @someguy;, a structure will make this easier to work with before creating pages. This will help prevent a lot of clean-up work and moving later on, IMO.

Yup...I support/edit our internal media wiki at work (I'm a software developer so we put a bunch of our software products and design in the wiki) and structure is key to making it useful.

So whoever is going to be the overall god of the wiki should draft up a proposed index structure, have it reviewed in a thread, adjust, and then get that setup. Once that's done, then we can have people start filling in and creating the individual topics and pages.

I agree with the structure. No structure equals a giant mess. I recommend breaking it down into say Gen1 then Gen2. Seperate section for MS6/CX-7/Miata's, shit like that. He breaks it down. Says whats available, for what car, prices and so on and so forth. This "layout" per-say could be used for quite a few sections. Add in the who, what, when, where, why and how. Everything after that is history.

Personally I think the specific vehicle/year considerations should be a part of the main page for whatever just to cut down on having to get click happy or having information in multiple locations, even if that means the pages get a little bigger.

Keep in mind we can always reformat/redirect pages as needed later.

I already had a conflict with Enki while we both were editing a page; the wiki handled it just fine. It basically shows me his change before submitting mine and asks me if I would like to proceed with my changes. In that case, users should fully review the update and then commit their update to the other users new updates rather than overwriting them.

I am using the Methanol section as a sandbox to learn how to do this.

It would be interesting to see what would happen to this if it was open range for a few days; i.e. see how people populate it and edit their work. It could be that a true open structure would be beneficial or it might be utter anarchy. We will know pretty quick what we like and what we don't by letting it run its course for a few days. Plus, unless I am mistaken, it looks like pages/links/etc can be moved around pretty quickly to clean up the structure to whatever folks want. Say it turns to anarchy, all of the data is there and it just has to be structured how the group wants.

Also, I would like to bring up image hosting. A concern would be that if we source images from other sites or photo sharing sites that the image owner can remove their image and the site loses the image.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be a good thing for MSF to have an image repository so images can be hosted by MSF for Wikispeedia?

I did the same thing using the e85 section to learn how to do this stuff, and then linked it to the main page only to make it easier to get to. It is very easy to just create content and then structure it later, but having a good foundation to work off of is also a good idea.

I don't follow...the structure seems title based:

/wiki/index.php?title=Seasonal_Blends_by_Region

And the pages I created were done by searching for what I wanted the page title to be and then making that page exist.

I think it was the categories/page strategy. Like I'd imagine you want Parts/Tuning to be categories with pages under them.

Well i was waiting on that.. I went ahead and added:

$wgGroupPermissions['user']['upload'] = false;

Which only allows those with edits to upload files. Lemme know if you are having issues with it.

I can edit pages right now with just creating an account myself (unless someone gave me more permissions). I don't see the usual upload link in the left menu though.

This is what it says in my preferences though for groups I'm in...I take it there's another users one? No matter if I can't upload. I can edit existing pages as it stands too.
