Unfortunately, we can't make the dinner this year. We are planning to bounce early Saturday because we have a wedding to attend Saturday afternoon/evening. Believe me, I'd rather serve meat again over a wedding.

Thanks! You've always been so great with this! A lot of BBQ places go a little crazy on the "everything must have all the meats" thing, so I make no assumptions about sides anymore. I can get by just fine on those sides, no sense in pretending i normally eat more than mac and cheese for a meal, haha. I'll just drink $20 worth of booze to make it worth the $25 (jk, I would die).

for the ppl that wasnt at ENM last year or in general. anybody thats going to the dragon I highly recommend grabbing a baofeng UV-5r walkie talkie. these radios will do 5 watts out the box which i was able to talk to ppl 2-3 miles away with this radio where everybody else was cutting at 1/2 mile.

fact, or at least split between two if radio traffic gets thick, with the baofeng you can listen to two channels at one time, the radio will "talk" on whatever channel you select as primary, I did that a lot at ENM last year just to keep up with other groups

the baofeng is a good choice...i got a motorola walkie that performs really well also, but just about several off the shelf walkies just flat out suck, not because of tx recieve quality, but they poorly built and dont last more than a few weeks of use.

I think Nator VA uses marine band radios...and guess what the baofeng can talk to them too!

It's illegal to use any radio that is not type-accepted for the FRS frequencies on FRS (same with GMRS). Type acceptance means the FCC has reviewed and approved the radio design. The Baofeng radio in question cannot be type-accepted primarily because it is more powerful than allowed for FRS radios, but it also has a removable antenna which is a no-no, and it can operate on frequencies other than the FRS frequencies (FRS radios, like citizen's band radios, are required to be channelized and able to operate only on the defined channels). There are probably many other reasons.

In a similar vein, it's not legal to use marine frequencies when both parties are inland (so transmissions aren't related to waterways), regardless of what radio is being used.

I'd add that there are several other radios in the current Baofeng line, and while the uv-5r is the cheapest, it's not the best. The best one is said to be the UV-82HP but that's a poor choice because it doesn't even have a low setting that is close-ish to the FRS frequencies, and it's also pretty costly compared to the others. The UV-82 is probably the best choice, though the UV-5R will work fine if your goal is minimum cost. The problem is that this answer is the same shit as asking what's the best RMM. It depends what you're looking for, for example are you willing to take the time to do the programming. It's not difficult, but it's not a radio you can just take out of the box and use.

Unlikely, as was noted. However, the Baofeng (non type approved) radio is not necessarily cheaper. Currently on Amazon the UV-5R is $24, the UV-82 is $26. You'll want a programming cable; it can be programmed by hand but it's a lot easier on the computer. Cable is $9 if you're willing to play driver boogie, $20 for the non-boogie one. About $5 for DIY. You can buy a pair of "23-mile range" (not really) Motorola FRS radios for $40, a pair of Uniden "16-mile" FRS for $29. You can get really good deals on this stuff on eBay too. But of course you can pay as much as you want for things, and will if you want fancier radios, rechargeable batteries, drop-in chargers or whatnot - which come with the Baofeng radio.

Of course the Baofeng is probably a "better" radio for the buck, but compared to a decent FRS radio, on the dragon there really isn't a big difference (especially if you keep the stock Baofeng antenna which kinda sucks). The Baofeng is useful for lots of other radio things like monitoring police systems that don't use trunking or digital (so smaller towns mostly), and it can monitor airplane, marine, weather radio (which can be had in some FRS radios too though probably for more cash). You could listen to old amateur radio guys bitch about their hemorrhoids. It would also be possible to transmit on those frequencies, which could get you into trouble more quickly than you are likely to on FRS.

Yes, in fact on the Dragon you will be told "channel 5" or 7 or whatever, which will be an FRS channel. Since you will previously have programmed those into channels 5 and 7 of your Baofeng, you'll be able to dial it up like the guys with FRS radios, which is what many of the others in our group will in fact be using. Being able to talk to those guys, but have a better radio, is the point of the baofeng.

If you want to be able to listen to police also, then buy the Baofeng.
If you want to use it on the dragon and get weather (for camping/hunting/etc) then either get the baofeng or these:

If you are paranoid about "being the best", want to be heard beyond your driving group, are considering getting an amateur radio license, get the baofeng.
If you want your mom to be able to pick up the radio and use it, get an FRS radio.

AFAIK nobody has ever gotten fined using a non type accepted radio on frs/gmrs frequencies .. Your issues come in is if u transmit with the radios on licensed frequencies without a proper license....if on a gmrs channel and someone bitches.. Move to a different channel... But the best way to avoid that is just to stick to the Frs channels..

Aackthpt covered it well.. If u don't wanna deal with programming and all that.. Just get a ots radio and be done.. I got fed up with those radios cuz they always break.. Batttery life was horrible and range audio quality just flat out sucked... I can get a full 2days use out my baofeng off a single charge

The worst of the FRS radios _are_ pretty bad. For example we tried some of these last year that I borrowed, and they were pretty crap:

I've got to wonder if it's related to them only taking 3 AAA batteries.

In contrast, these take 4 AAAs and are good radios. I've had some like these for decades; the rechargeable batteries still work fine and the batteries last a very long time whether using alkalines or rechargeables:

This is why I suggested to buy FRS radios with the longer rated ranges - not because you'll actually get those ranges but because those tend to be higher-line, better built radios. Also any radio that is FRS/GMRS is going to be on the higher end. Avoid any radio that has an extremely small display (like the first Cobra above) or an extremely short antenna. Typically the longer an antenna is the better, and radios with tiny displays are built to an extreme price point, not for performance.

Another thing you can look for is radios with a microphone plug and earphone plug both, preferably in the right pattern. That's a setup to take an earphone with a mic in the cord, or for pro communications more commonly a speaker mic like this:

A radio that has a setup to take that connector is more likely to be a decent radio than one that doesn't have it. Note the first Cobra radio doesn't have that provision, the second one shown does.

Can confirm I am out for Epic. Turnaround at work was supposed to run April 4-21 so it was iffy before. We just got pushed back to 11-29, and I asked about the possibility of getting at least the weekend so I could make a day trip Saturday and leave Sunday, got shot down firmly.
