Default COBB MS3 Products in Testing and Updates to the Shop Car

Well, we have done a few things to the old girl and are testing more parts. I will start off with the parts you are more likely to use for your MS3.

First is the COBB Turbo Inlet. We are ditching the stock inlet with a direct replacement silicon piece. We chose silicone for heat rejection purposes as well as being able to get a much smoother internal wall and a proper transition from the stock size intake side to the stock size turbo compressor inlet. Another feature is the the BPV vent tube is routed into the intake at a acute angle so that it combines better with the intake air. All in order to get the least turbulent flow to the turbo's compressor housing. Less turbulence and more cross-sectional area in the middle of the inlet mean more flow and being silicone it will not add heat to the intake air.

Next is the final revision of the COBB Downpipe. Here is a feature list to make your mouth watter.

Cast turbine outlet
  • CAD designed for smooth combination of turbine outlet and wastegate gasses
  • Optimal flow with the tight space of the MS3 engine bay.
  • Has clearance for tools to make installation easier.
  • Specifically shaped to reduce the amount of bends in the system for greater flow.
  • Investment cast for smoother flow and a lower weight compared to less precise forms of casting.
  • Casting reduces wastegate noises, increases longevity, and reduces heat transfer to the engine bay.
  • Cast from 304 stainless steel for corrosion resistance and heat rejection, keeping more heat in the exhaust for increased velocity, and reduced heat transfer to the engine bay.
  • Extra O2 sensor bung welded on for aftermarket wideband O2 sensor/data logging device that is easy to get to from the engine bay. Comes with bung plug pre-installed for those without a aftermarket wideband O2 meter/data logger.
Metal substrate high flow cat
  • Much higher flow than ceramic or “brick” style cats.
  • Much more reliable than ceramic or “brick” style cats.
  • Reaches operating temperature faster for cleaner cold-start emissions.
  • Made from 400 grade stainless steel for longevity.
  • Custom spun so that it is one piece for better flow and longevity.
Standard secondary factory O2 sensor placed after the cat
  • Reduces the possibility of a CEL.
  • ***Still has the possibility to cause a CEL***
Polished 304 stainless steel tubing
  • Greater corrosion resistance, keeping more heat in the exhaust for increased velocity, and reduced heat transfer to the engine bay.
Internally lined stainless steel flex section
  • Here is a picture of the flex section we use vs a non-lined flex connector. Ours is on the left

  • Smoother internal exhaust gas flow
  • Much more reliable due to the main flex section being more isolated from the exhaust gas heat and better support due to two flex sections to carry weight and absorb axial, longitudinal, and lateral movement
  • There are an equal amount of flex points in the same placement as the factory downpipes.
  • Optimal placement of the flex section before the first hangers to absorb engine movement, transferring less movement and stress to the rest of the exhaust as it is on the factory car. All this increases longevity.
304 Stainless steel hangers with good bracing
  • Less likely to bend or break with the large amount of engine movement in the MS3.
Uses stock donut gasket
  • Another point of axial and longitudinal flex.
  • Easily serviceable using factory gasket.
  • Seals better and reduces noise compared to formed metal ball socket style.
  • Retains the use of factory spring bolts or studs to aid in flex, longevity and good fitment.
  • Smooth transition with the optimal 15 degree taper to the diameter of the donut gasket for better flow.
  • Will mate properly to any cat-back that mates to the factory second cat section.
Replaces the factory 2 piece, 2 cat downpipes with a one piece design
  • Better flow.
  • Reduced complexity.

The only picture I have for the moment is a teaser of it in the engine bay.

Now on to the super trick stuff as if that was not enough.

We feel that we have done more testing and tuning with the stock struts and basic, but well thought-out changes, than anyone else in the country, possibly in the world. Our springs and sway bars have proven their ability to be a very capable package, even competitive/dominant in street forms classes of Time Attack, and even breaking a record or two in the process. Now it is time to see how serious we can get with some coil-overs. We are starting with triple adjustable units in our testing. This will allow us to reach an optimal setting for the street and track, place it on our in-house shock dyno, read the damping curves, and apply this knowledge to a single adjustable set-up. This amount of R&D I believe, will not be even close to matched for the MS3. The result will be a triple adjustable set-up that will be capable of being competitive in the highest forms of motorsports, as well as a single adjustable set-up that will be MUCH more capable than current offerings as well as having a ride that will keep your kidneys in tact. Just a teaser shot of the rear suspension for now.

Finally we just added some gold heat shielding to our current box so that we can do some more temperature testing to see if a composite box will have advantages. Plus gold heat shielding just makes is look like NASA has been working on it, and it is capable of going to the moon.

I will also re-iterate that these are teasers. No information about price or timeframe is available at this time. Please do not call in regarding them until they are released.

Nice work guys, keep it up, hope to see more MS6 parts soon.
I've been talking to the guys at Cobb Plano and they seem eager to do some work.

I know the triple adjustables won't be cheap but adding a set of top mount camber plates would sweeten the deal.

adjustable camber plates wont net you much camber, im looking to increase my camber significantly and if you want more than 1.5 like I do, its time for adjustable lower control arms
cobb wanna step up for a set of those?! ill buy the first set

It's been done already with Kmac plates, up to 3 I think.

wrong thread to talk about this, but camber plates dont get much on our car because the spring will eventually contact the inside of the strut tower
the kmac advertise more than they can get

LBV
The good news is that a lot of things transfer. When I get the large batch of downpipe castings I will try to get a MS6 in to make a mock-up downpipe. My hope is that it is just a length or other small adjustment and make a fixture. I tried to order some things in a way that will let me use most parts for both the MS3 and MS6 in the downpipe department.

Both the triple and adjustables are planned to have camber adjustment.

Our stock front springs have a large diameter. Like most aftermarket coil overs, I am assuming cobb's diameter will be small. Hence the reason I am having Kmac make a smaller diameter top coil mount. Tigermack and sokool on the "other" forum have their car dialed in.

Do you have any price "range" regarding the coilovers?

No price range, but they will not be on the budget end with the higher end components used, precision, and actual R&D that will go into them. The cheapest alternatives usually make the car ride poor and handle worse, the mid range ones usually make a small improvement, and ours should outperform all the single adjustables once dialed-in. They will not be super expensive, but more than the current single adjustables. Keep in mind that that will also include top hats and everything.

bring on the single adjustable coil-overs!
Triple-adjustable is too much for me; a quality single-adjustable is what I'm interested in.

Ya, we do not really expect to sell many triple adjustables except to a few race teams. We are using them for R&D as much as anything. Once we get the daping curves where we want them we can carry that over to the single adjustables.

I assume by "race team" you mean a single individual like myself that may be racing, but is by no means a team.

unless you plan to price the small man out, assuming these will cost less than Moton's and perform properly for the platform, im in.
do you happen to know what spring rates you will be testing/starting to test on the 3 ways?

Ok, can someone enlighten me as to exactly what three parameters are adjustable on a triple-adjustable coilover... jounce and rebound damping and ride height?

High speed compression, low speed compression, rebound, and height. The height is not typically considered one of the options. It is typically assumed that that part is always adjustable.

screw the singles, i cant wait till those 3 ways release. Might those 3 ways be avail before the singles since you will be testing off them to design the single adjustables?

Still way too early to tell what we are doing. So we can give pretty much no official word on anything with the shocks for now.
